Updates & Reminders
Remember to read to your child for at least 20 minutes EVERY DAY! This is the single most important thing you can do to help your child be successful as a reader!
- The Homecoming soccer game is next Friday, September 29th at Cooper Field. The tailgate starts at 5:00 and will have bounce houses, food trucks, etc. The game starts at 7:30. Come join in the fun! Go Bluejays!
- The Scholastic Book Fair is October 2nd-6th. Details were sent home last week.
- October 12th & 13th: Fall Break (NO SCHOOL)
- As the weather turns cooler your child may need a jacket (especially since our first recess is at 9:45). Please work with your child on putting their jacket on and taking it off independently. Sometimes children need to be taught how to pull the arms through if they are inside-out, etc. Zippers can be tricky so I do not expect children to be able to zip their jackets by themselves, but I will ask them to try it on their own before asking for help. Please encourage your child to try it on their own at home as well!
- The story Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems is about a little girl named Trixie and her very favorite stuffed animal. Students may bring a special stuffed animal to school on Wednesday, September 27th and we will write about our stuffed animals. It must be able to fit inside your child's backpack and please do not send anything that makes noise.
- On Monday, firefighters from the Springfield Fire Department will present to students about fire prevention and safety. We will also have our first zoo visit that day!
- Parent-teacher conferences will be held October 31st & November 1st. Students do not have school those days. Watch for a sign-up sheet soon.

Reading
- Sight Word: can
- One-to-one matching, and pointing to the first letter of each word.
- We will read Knuffle Bunny and look at the traits of the character "Trixie." (Fun Fact: this character is based on Mo Willems' actual daughter!)
- We will discuss story elements in Knuffle Bunny (characters, setting, problem, solution).
- The story Knuffle Bunny is about a little girl named Trixie and her very favorite stuffed animal! Students may bring a special stuffed animal to school on Wednesday, September 27th and we will write about our stuffed animals. It must be able to fit inside your child's backpack and should not make any noises.
- We will compare the characters Gerald and Piggie (from the Elephant & Piggie books).
- We will read the Mo Willems book, Should I Share My Ice Cream? Students will use what they have learned about persuasive arguments to convince Mrs. Lowe to share her ice cream (Spoiler alert: I will probably share my ice cream!)
- We will work in teams to sequence the events of a story.
We Love Mo Willems!
Writing
We will continue to work on saying words slowly and writing the sounds we hear. We will also work on using the ABC chart as a tool to help us with writing the sounds we hear, and with knowing what the letters look like and how to write them correctly. Once children get comfortable with writing the sounds they hear (even if they are not sure how to spell a word correctly), their writing begins to take off!
Your child may enjoy the video below... the author himself teaches you how to draw Pigeon!
Word Study
- Hearing and clapping syllables in words.
- Orally blending syllables to make a word.
- Correct letter formation and sound for the letters Rr, Ss, Tt, Uu.
Math
We will:
- Match sets/ quantities with numerals
- Use mathematical terms such as: compare, greater than, less than, more, fewer, equal to
- Understand the concepts of one more and one less with quantities and numerals
- Sequence numerals and sets of objects
