Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of January 29, 2018
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
Happy Friday! It was so great to see so many of you at the big BATTLE OF THE BOOKS event today! One of our very own teams came in an agonizingly close second! I am so proud of each and every participant, and appreciate your show of support whether you were a coach, a cheerleader, or costume designer! ;-) I hope your kids enjoyed the experience and are encouraged to participate again next year.
This is a BIG WEEKEND for football fans! Unfortunately, our Vikings aren't playing, but there are bound to be some great commercials. If all else fails, turn the station to the Puppy Bowl and REALLY have some fun!
Enjoy your weekend!

A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: Animal Research!! The students continued to work on their descriptive paragraphs this week and ended with one, "almost-perfect", revised and edited, third grade paragraph including an introduction sentence, three supporting details, and a conclusion sentence. Next week we will begin researching HABITAT facts using the same process.
ANIMAL MENAGERIE OPEN-HOUSE: To celebrate our learning, the students will have an opportunity to present their final products to you on Tuesday, March 20 from 1:00-2:00 in our classroom. Please send $4.00 to cover the cost of project supplies, which will include, a tri-fold board for the presentation. Thank you for your help!
Content: Continuing with our work on habitats, we used Mystery Science to explore HOW shark teeth ended up in the middle of the Arizona desert! We will continue to explore animals next week and will determine if we could, in fact, outrun a dinosaur! Stay tuned!
Reader's Workshop: Students used what they learned about using context clues while reading short informational text. We practiced FINDING EVIDENCE by going back into the text and underlining the answers to questions. We held a "Battle of the Scholastic News", formatted like Battle of the Books, and practiced discussing answers and providing evidence to support our answers. The kids had a great time and are eager to "play the game" again! Teacher WIN!
