6th Grade Happening's
Work Like A Captain...Play Like A Pirate!
ELA: In English students have been busy writing a Greek mythology paper. They have also been composing a compare and contrast piece over the Lightning Thief novel and movie. Students are learning about persuasive speeches and picking a side "against" or "for" a subject question and how to create a logical argument. We will be taking the STAR360 assessment again in January in ELA and math. Students should be reading 30 minutes each night.
Social Studies: In class students will be comparing and contrasting Greece Civilization and the Roman Empire writing an essay utilizing technology (Prezi, PowerPoint, Animoto, Canva, etc.) or on construction paper. Students should finish these presentations this week.
Math: In math we have started ratios, equivalent ratios, and rate reasoning to solve word problems. We have had several nights of ratio homework, since I felt they needed added practice. Remember students have access to my Weebly website at night and can play many math practice educational games, like SumDog, Frontrowmath, and MobyMax.http://humphreville6thgrade.weebly.com/math-resources.html
Science/Engineering: We are still working through light and sound vibrations and waves in science. We have joined the other 6th grade classes in rotations for sound demonstrations with instruments. We have also visited many sound websites to take notes from and experiment with sound activities. We plan to take a light and sound test this week using students notes.
We have also been active with the Hour of Code, which is a Global movement to introduce computer science and code basics to students. This has been a lot of fun to see how creative our students can be with the coding basics that they are learning.
Here is a post from Ivy Nelson our Belton Technology Integration Specialists showing off what one of our classmates Ian has coded:

Technology Reminder...
Please help remind your students that their computers are a learning tool that need to be charged every night before bed. Several are starting to show up with no charge on them. We do not have the capability to re-charge everyone's devices at HC STEAM. Also, cell phones are to remain off during the day and in a students backpack. They know that they can always check with me during non-learning times if they are expecting a message from home. I will implement a cell phone jail in our room, since we have had a few phones being used in the restrooms and in their specials classes. If I take their phone they will get it back at the end of the day. Thanks for your support with this!
