Klem South Penguin Press

November Edition

Dear Klem South Families,

November will be a busy month for our penguins! At this point in the school year, students are settling in and are comfortable with the routines and expectations. As we visit classrooms, we see students who are learning from one another, responding positively to adults and peers, advocating for their learning, and reaching high expectations. Thank you for your support and partnership at home. We know that our students are better able to achieve personal learning goals when both home and school work collaboratively to support the process. We are extremely grateful to partner with you!

This week, students will practice the procedures associated with a lockdown drill. Teachers will review the process with their homerooms and talk about the expectations during this safety procedure. A lockdown requires all students and staff members to lock their doors and hide. Because we are on the heels of an event at KS, we are choosing to practice this learning in the safety of the homeroom environment. Teachers will choose a time that works best in their homeroom schedule. In the coming weeks, we will conduct a school-wide lockdown drill with law enforcement. Right now, we want students to feel safe to learn the procedures in a non-threatening and calm environment.

As always, if we can be of assistance to you, please contact us.

5th Grade Science News:

We are are working on our eco-columns. The students loved making terrariums and aquariums and are excited to connect them, learning about how what we do on land, really affects our waterways.

A note from Mrs. Piwko...

Thank you for your sample size shampoos, conditioners and body washes. My class will begin to assemble individual personal washing kits this week. These kits will be donated to a local shelter where kids can use them. Please continue to send in any donations you have as we will continue collecting all year.

A message from the main office...

Please remember, when requesting bus passes, you must include a bus number and address. Thanks so much!

Mindfulness in Webster

The Webster Central School District's exploration of Mindfulness is founded in the neuroscience of Mindfulness. This exploration is focused on toxic stress and its impact on our faculty and staff, and deeply centered on our students. According to Mindful Schools, "...because the roots of toxic stress lie deep in the nervous system, we need tools that go beyond the conceptual mind to directly target that system. To transform our habitual responses, we need to regularly practice our skills when we are not in “fight – flight – freeze” mode." Mindfulness offers targeted strategies that support all practitioners with: "attention, compassion, emotional regulation, calming, adaptability and resilience." Additionally, Mindfulness supports our One Webster work in Essential Skills, Core Beliefs, C.A.R.E attributes, Mission and the District Vision of Compassionately Connected, Joyfully Engaged and Always Learning.

Schroeder Seniors Names National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Earlier this fall, approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced, and three Webster Schroeder High School seniors were among those named. Congratulations to Allison Lisciandro, Lucas Lyons, and Anirudh Sharma, academically talented students who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Those scholarships will be offered in spring 2019, so we will let you know how this talented trio progresses!

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
