The Weekly Jr. Oiler
September 6, 2019
Welcome Back, Jr. Oilers
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! On Thursday, we welcomed approximately 1,300 smiling faces to our halls. Entering the buildings with all the new construction was exciting for all, as a tunnel full of staff and parents greeted students and high-fived them into school. The excitement continued all day with every classroom now being updated and our GRIT theme throughout the halls! It is truly a great time to be a Jr. Oiler!
Students have one-to-one technology access in all classrooms! This means that students have access to a device (Chromebook) all day! Thank you, Measure Q. In addition, we are starting our school year with an all school read-aloud of the novel Bystander. This book will help students talk about middle school issues and have a school-wide common language to follow. More details are to come.
Below we have highlighted some of the fun activities that students and teachers took part in during the first two days of school. The focus was on relationship building and GRIT. It is so important that we all feel a sense of belonging and get to know each other. So much of middle school is finding out who you are and who you want to become. Our Jr. Oilers are going to grow so much in the next 180 school days!

Bystander Read-Aloud
Starting Monday, September 9, the entire school will be participating in a read-aloud of the book Bystander. This fictional novel is our proactive approach to social emotional learning with our students. Students and teachers will be discussing themes and issues that are present in middle school and conducting activities along the way. We plan to read 4 days a week until approximately October 11. We encourage families to read along at home so that you can discuss the themes as a family.
Important Reminders of School Policies
Cell Phones: Now that students have Chromebooks in class, cell phones are not needed for educational purposes at school. Due to recent statistics and the rise in anxiety and depression in youth linked to social media and phone use, students will not be allowed to use cell phones or smart watches during the school day. We want to give them time to be kids here at school without the pressure of the phone. Please help us enforce this policy by not texting or calling your child during the school day (before school or after the final bell is fine). We are happy to pass along important messages to your child through the office.
Students with their phones or earbuds out will have them confiscated and turned in to the office. After the first infraction, parents will be required to pick up the device and students will begin to accumulate detentions and demerits.
Drop-off and Pick-up Reminders
The back parking lot is not a safe area for student walkways and therefore is not a drop-off and pick-up location. It will be under construction for much of the year and is closed to all but staff. Thank you.
