This week in the Elm Class

Yikes! We did not get many pictures this week! Hopefully we will have a more colorful update next week.

November Family Conferences

Thank you to everyone who has already scheduled a conference time. If you have not had a chance just yet, please use this link to choose a time that will work for your schedule.

Please note that school will dismiss at noon on Thursday, November 19th and Friday, November 20th so that teachers can meet with families.

Trip to Ditmas Park and thirdroot (Rescheduled)

Tuesday, Nov. 17th, 9am-1pm

380 Marlborough Road

We will visit another unique place in Brooklyn next Tuesday when we take the train to Ditmas Park. We will stop by thirdroot health center for a tour and a spacial yoga class.

Please join us! Chaperones support our studies. Please get in touch with us if you are available on Tuesday morning.

Project Time this Week

This week we looked at all the special places that students wanted to visit across the second grade. Teachers wish we could go to all of them but we realize this will not be possible to do in a short period of time. We grouped these places into categories; Neighborhood Walks, Food, Community Centers, Home Visits, Natural Places, and Landmarks. Second graders chose their top three interests and we will use this information to make trips groups. In a smaller interest group, students will make a plan for a trip to learn more about at least one of the places on our list. We will report back our findings after our visit.

Small Group Trips in Brooklyn

Monday, Nov. 23rd, 9pm

Second Graders are planning trips in Brooklyn. We adventure out on Monday, November 23rd to the places they choose.

We do not yet know just where we are going. We will need chaperones to support our studies. Please let us know if you can join us. We will share more details soon.

Reading this Week

As readers, the Elm class is continuing to have a growth spurt!

This week we practiced stopping to retell and also "stop and jot" to write questions or connections on sticky notes.

Next week will will focus on strategies we use when we encounter tricky words and also on the big ideas in books.

Writing this Week

As writers, Elm is continuing to write "all about" books. This week we began to notice and use diagrams in our all about books. Next week we will incorporate more features such as captions and headings. We will also think what we want our big ideas to be in our own books.

Math this Week

This week we wrapped up our study of money by running our very own farm stand in the dramatic play center. Students shopped for vegetables (hand sewn by second graders) and by collecting $3.00 in coins and choosing produce that equals that amount.

Collect 25 game

This week, students illustrated their own Collect 25¢ directions sheet and took home a recording sheet as well. We hope you play this game together at home.

All you need is some coins and a dice. You can slip the recording sheet into a sheet protector and use the dry erase marker to record your coins as you play.

If you need any additional materials to play this game, please let us know.

November Shares

We have loved hearing about special items and events during morning meeting. Here is our schedule for the month of November.

Please see the following calendar for the upcoming shares and consider a special object, photo, or story with your child.

Celebrate Compass

Thursday, Dec. 3rd, 8pm

647 Fulton Street

By now you'e likely heard that we're having a party. A really fun one. We want everyone to come out to BRIC on December 3rd and spend some time celebrating together, raising money to support an inquiry based resource center that all of our kids will benefit from, and generally feel good about what we've got going on at Compass.

There is a discount code for families if the price is a concern. The goal is really just to get EVERYONE out. If you want to purchase tickets at a discounted price, the code is:compassfamily
