San Onofre Student Lighthouse Team
The Student Lighthouse team is one of the many student leadership opportunities at San Onofre Elementary. Students on this team work together to create school spirit days, make decorations for school events, and develop ideas on how to make our school better. This team synergizes with staff members and our school PTA to collaborate on a variety of different projects. We are so excited to get this year started with our new Student Lighthouse team and all their exciting new ideas for SOS!
We are thankful to have Ms. Garver and Ms. Gunzelman chairing our Student Lighthouse Team! Congratulations to students who were selected to participate. Students will meet every Tuesday morning at 7:30am in Room 11.

After School LEGO Clubs in Grades 3-6
This year at San Onofre School, we have two after school LEGO clubs. One for grades 5 & 6 and another for grades 3 & 4. Due to the age differences, the clubs are different, but they both adopt the Core Values.
We do the work to find solutions!

San Onofre Robotics Teams: We Build!
Core Values
By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.
- We are a team.
- We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
- We know our coaches and mentors don't have all the answers; we learn together.
- We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
- What we discover is more important than what we win.
- We share our experiences with others.
- We display Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® in everything we do.
- We have FUN!
Grades 3 and 4
This is our first year participating in First LEGO League, Jr. Students meet once a week to work on the Challenge, “Aqua Adventure.” Guided by coaches, teams work to solve a water problem using special LEGO kits. They will create a solution and presentation to share at our school and possibly at a local school. At this age level, the event is an expo, a sharing, as opposed to a competition. All skill levels are welcome to join as we solve real-world challenges with research, critical thinking and imagination.
Grades 5 and 6
San Onofre School's Robotics Club has competed in the First LEGO League (FLL) for several years. FLL is an exciting alliance between FIRST and the LEGO® Group. It’s a robotics program for students, 9 to 14 years old, which is designed to get children excited about science and technology. Additionally, it aims to teach them valuable employment and life skills. Teams of up to 10 kids program an autonomous robot (using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot set) to score points on a thematic playing surface, create an innovative solution to a problem as part of their Project, all while guided by the FLL Core Values. These three elements - the Robot Game, Project, and FLL Core Values - make up what is called the yearly Challenge. This program begins each year with a new challenge, released in August. This year’s theme is “Hydro Dynamics”. Meeting twice a week, after school, these teams come up with innovative solutions for the Robot Game and for handling problems involving water.
