And now a word from our Principal, Dr. DeCorte...
Dear Woodbury Families,
I hope you had a relaxing spring break and are ready for an exciting next few months at Woodbury. Between the school newsletter, online calendar, website, FB, and classroom notes I think you will have a good idea of all that will be happening here at school and there is a lot happening over the next two months. We really enjoyed the whole school reading and going to the movie with Stuart Little. I hope your family enjoyed sharing the activities with your children. Thank you for supporting this wonderful activity.
Coming up in April we have our school Spring Concert, Smart Grid STEM Community activity, Paper Making and if weather permitting Planting for Earth Day, Grandparents (or a Special Person) Day, lots of grade level field trips, and annual assessments being done. May looks to be busy also, please make sure you keep track of everything with our school calendar. Kindergarten Registration already happened and all those registered will be invited to our annual get to know kindergarten night, so if you know someone who has not registered yet please encourage them to register.
One of the activities we will be doing as a whole school is going to LegoLand Discovery Center in May, keep an eye out for information about that trip.
Wednesday Expert Project afternoon meeting times will be ending soon. Third graders will be presenting the topics they have been gathering information about since first grade May 2nd - 5th.
As many of you know I will be retiring at the end of this school year Although it is with some sadness that I will be leaving Woodbury, knowing what good hands I am leaving the school in makes retiring much easier. I want to announce and welcome W. W. Woodbury's new principal, Jen Kern. We are all very excited about having Mrs. Kern join our Woodbury Community. I know she will enjoy being principal of our great little school. We asked Mrs. Kern to write an article introducing herself:
A Very Special Announcement
I am honored to be able to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. My name is Jen Kern, and I have the wonderful privilege of being the principal of Woodbury School next year. Life has truly come full circle since that first day of kindergarten with Mr. Schrock nearly 35 years ago. I have so many fond memories of my time at Woodbury. I look forward to being part of a strong school community that continues to serve in providing children with opportunities and experiences that they will also be able to look back on and smile.
I have been in the field of education for the last 14 years, and an administrator for the last four years in Oswego CUSD 308. My teaching experience is at the elementary level in the general education classroom, having taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. My professional experience has involved working with diverse populations of students over the years including general education, gifted, English Language Learners, and special education students including a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program that has been a part of my current school since we opened 12 years ago. From the moment I interviewed, I was able to go home and share with my family the excitement, positive energy, and comfort I felt amongst the staff of Woodbury and District #430.
I currently reside in Paw Paw with my husband Zac and our two wonderful children, Avery (6) and Samuel (3). Both of our children attend(ed) preschool at IVVC’s Bright Beginnings. My parents still live down the street from the school and we have been fortunate that they have helped care for our children since they were born. We are a proud farm family and my husband also owns and operates a successful landscaping business that he began at 10 years old. Our family is incredibly active enjoying sports, fitness, and anything that keeps us moving as well as being outdoors whenever we can. We look forward to becoming involved in the Sandwich community.
Although I don’t officially start until August, I have already had the opportunity to visit Woodbury and look forward to meeting families and students prior to the school year beginning. As an elementary principal, I realize the education of children is a difficult job and cannot be accomplished without a partnership between parents and the surrounding community. I am excited to get to know your children and I am so thankful to be able to begin this incredible journey with all of you.
Your partner in education,
Jen Kern
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION 2017-2018
The Sandwich School District is continually holding Kindergarten Registration for the 2016-2017 school year. If your child will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2017, he/she is eligible for Kindergarten.
This registration is to determine the approximate enrollment for 2017-2018 school year. Please bring with you a state issued birth certificate and three forms of proof of residency (one being either a rental, lease or mortgage document). The district cannot register any student until we have proof of residency. No payment is required at this time.
All students registered on these dates will be invited to a special Kindergarten orientation to be held in the spring. If you are unsure which elementary building your child will attend, please contact one of the following schools: Woodbury (815)786-6316, Prairie View (815)786-8811 or Haskin at (815)786-8812.
Woodbury Facebook Page
We post lots of activities on our school Facebook page. Have you had a chance to look at the Woodbury Elementary School page? Make sure you find the correct one though - the W.W. Woodbury page is inactive, the CORRECT page is Woodbury Elementary School https://www.facebook.com/Woodbury-Elementary-School-175306045839116/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel. If you don't have a computer or internet at home, did you know you can use the computers at the Sandwich Library? Also, when the children aren't using the computers in our school library you are welcome to go online here at school. Please check out our FB page sometime soon.
WOODBURY SPRING CONCERT
Our Woodbury Spring Concert will be Tuesday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sandwich High School gymnasium. See information, performance time and location address below.
As performance-based standards are outlined in the performance section of core music standards, students will participate in a thematic musical performance. The theme for the evening is all about Heros. Students can wear super hero outfits if they would like! Please drop off children in the high school cafeteria, then proceed to the gymnasium to get your seats. Teachers will not arrive until 5:40 p.m. Please do not drop off your child prior to this time. Please email Mr. Anderson at chad.anderson@kidsroe.org with any questions, or feel free to call at school.

Grandparents' Day
Woodbury School will hold our Grandparents’ Day on Wednesday, April 26th, 2017.
“A” Classes will be at 10:15
“B” Classes will be at 1:15
Spring Book Fair
You are invited to our Scholastic Book Fair, a reading event packed with excitement for students and families. Join us from April 24th to April 27th, any time between 7:45 and 3:15 to support the super student in your life, and to promote literacy!
Our Book Fair theme – Here’s to Our Heroes! Reading Saves the Day! – is part of a weeklong event that brings the books kids love to our school in an atmosphere of fun. Because everyday heroes surround us, the heroes theme allows students to celebrate all types of heroes, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, inspired by a love for books.
A Book Fair gives students access to books at affordable prices and makes reading a positive experience. Children are more likely to read the books they personally get to choose. It’s one of the best ways to motivate kids to read more. The more time children spend reading, the stronger their reading skills are. And strong reading skills are the pathway to succeed in school and in life. Reading is the most powerful skill of all!
Please join us to make this Book Fair the BEST our school has ever seen. I look forward to seeing you at the Fair!
Earth Day
At Woodbury we do two activities to remind us about the importance of Recycling and Earth Day each year. We try to do the activities around Earth Day each year (April 22nd) but that has not been working out very well because the weather doesn’t cooperate. We are planning Flower Planting for May 3 and 4, but depending on the weather we may have to change the date. More information will come home about bringing in donated plants/flowers when we get a better idea of the weather.
We also do paper making as a lesson in recycling. Some of the paper that the children make is really beautiful! Papermaking is on the calendar for April 20th. If you haven’t already volunteered to help with paper making but would like to help, please give Lyn a call or send one of use an email lhulon@kidsroe.org or sdecorte@kidsroe.org

Student Placement
Please know your child’s educational experience is of utmost importance to us and we take it very seriously. Over the past few years there has been an increase in parent/guardian requests for student placement. Students are placed in classes by a combination of well studied and thought out processes. Classroom placement will be based on the following criteria:
1) Performance Assessments
2) Learning Style
3) Teacher (s) Input
4) Academic Performance
5) Male/Female Balance
6) Social Balance
7) Teacher Compatibility
8) Students Compatibility
9) Special Program Schedules
10) Physical Handicaps
11) Student Personality and Emotional needs
We appreciate your understanding of this matter. Together, as a team, we can accomplish much!
