WHAT'S NEXT???
What’s Next for Grade 12 Students?
For many Grade 12 students, early spring is a time that can generate both anxiety and excitement. While many students have already received offers of admission, some are still waiting. For those still waiting, we encourage to you to diligently check your emails, as well as each university’s student portal for updates on the status of your application and to verify if they might be missing any information in order to process your file. Some may require additional grades, official transcripts, or information on your activities. Note that it’s not unusual for some universities and programs to admit well into early summer (May – June).
For those who have received offers of admission, now’s the time for decision making!
According to an article by Academica, influential decision-making factors include:
- Reputation (is the institution/program known for excellence?)
- Academic (what’s the perception of the university’s faculty, libraries, and resources?)
- Financial factors (do they offer sufficient scholarships, is the university close to the student’s home?)
- Outcomes (do graduates go on to get good jobs?)
- Campus (do students tend to find the campus attractive?)
- Extracurricular factors (does the university/program have a good reputation for student experience, and/or strong recreational facilities?)
- Nurturing factors (how big are class sizes? Do students get much opportunity to interact directly with their instructors?)
So how does this translate into a concrete plan for evaluating offers of admission and confirming decisions? A great first step is laying out a comprehensive pro-con list for each university that has sent an offer of admission. Items to include in the pro-con list can be taken from the list of factors above, but can also include specific program features (courses, specializations, facilities), experiential education options (co-op, internships, study abroad), personal connections (faith-based, family and friends, personal interests), and more. Make it as personalized as possible, so that the decision is truly a reflection of personal values and experiences with the university.
Keep in mind that each university will have specific confirmation, residence application, and registration deadlines. Make sure to include those on your document, and mark your calendar as a reminder.
Once a decision is made, it will be important to prepare and organize the next steps for the journey into first year. These include housing decisions and applications, registration advising and course selection, finalizing document submission (final transcripts), and
move-in/orientation details.

UBC UPDATES **NEW**
This is an exciting time of year! We’re hard at work evaluating the 40,000+ applications we’ve received for 2018. Admissions decisions are released on a rolling basis and many students will have received an offer by now.
Next steps for admitted students
Students who have received an offer of admission from UBC might be wondering what’s next. Our I’ve been admitted. Now what? page offers a step-by-step guide and video to help admitted students accept their offer and navigate finances, housing, course planning, and more between now and September.
Deadline to accept offers of admission
The deadline to accept an offer of admission from UBC is June 1 (or the date indicated in the student’s Student Service Centre account). Students can accept their offer and pay their acceptance deposit ($500 for domestic students and $1,000 for international students) on the Student Service Centre.
Deadline to accept housing offers
To qualify for the first-year housing guarantee, students need to have applied for housing by May 1 and must accept their UBC offer of admission by June 1 (or May 1 in some cases). Residence offers are sent by email between June and August. Students will have seven days to accept their housing offer and pay the first instalment of residence and meal plan fees.
Registration deposit deferrals
Most students are required to pay a non-refundable deposit when they accept an offer of admission to UBC, but the University providesregistration deposit deferrals for certain groups. Any admitted students who have financial concerns are encouraged to contact anadvisor on the Okanagan campus or their Enrolment Services Professional (ESP) on the Vancouver campus.
International study permits
International students who are attending high school in Canada (and are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada) must obtain a post-secondary study permit to study at UBC. That will involve changing the conditions on their current permit. More guidance on study permits can be found on UBC’s Coming from abroad page.
Waitlisted students
We’ll be reviewing waitlisted applications over the next six weeks. Offers may go out sporadically, but the majority of waitlisted students will receive an update in early June. Students can learn more about what it means to be on a waitlist and what the review process looks like in our Frequently asked questions from Canadian high school applicants blog post.
Alternative pathways and appeals
Students who were unsuccessful in gaining admission to UBC are encouraged to contact an advisor at recruitment.ok@ubc.ca to discuss alternative pathways to UBC. They’re also encouraged to review their options in the event that there has been a mitigating circumstance that might justify an admission appeal.
Planning for first-year costs
Our cost calculator can help students and their financial supporters understand the financial commitment of a UBC education, and plan accordingly. Government student loans and UBC bursaries may be available, so students are encouraged to explore all of their options.
UBC, through student eyes
One of the best ways for your students to get a feel for UBC life is to read about the successes, challenges, and experiences of current students in the UBC Stories on our website.
Summer programs for Aboriginal students
On the Okanagan campus, Aboriginal Programs and Services is hosting two summer programs: Indigenous Summer Scholars Camp (Grades 7 to 9) and Indigenous Summer Leadership Camp(Grades 10 to 12). Both programs are free and include food, accommodation, and activities. Students are responsible for their own travel to and from campus. The deadline to apply is June 4.

SCHOLAR TREE (**NEW**)
Another resource that helps students find and apply for scholarships.
The site was created with the intent to help reduce student debt, which many students have to take on for post-secondary education. ScholarTree.ca streamlines the scholarship process for students; all they have to do is create a simple profile and based on the information they provide (including school, field of interest, volunteer experience etc.) we will match them to all of the scholarships that they qualify for.
There are still many scholarships available to students. ScholarTree.ca has over $330,000 worth of scholarship who deadlines will be closing in May and June alone. we have recently added a way for students to track applications that they have started and a summary of the scholarship they have already completed the applications.
ScholarTree is 100% free to students!
