East Hoops Wins 3rd at West Tourney
Proviso East Claims Third Place in Proviso West Holiday Tournament
The Proviso East High School boys’ basketball team announced its presence in top tier Chicagoland hoops after it claimed third place in the 61st edition of the Proviso West Holiday Basketball Tournament December 26-29, 2022.
The Pirates won the third-place trophy with a 66-61 overtime thriller over then-fourth-ranked St. Rita High School thanks to a 17-point effort from Jaloni Johnson and 12 points from Bryce Coleman. Dixon, who contributed 14 points, scored the game-tying basket with 19 seconds to go in regulation and the ultimate go-ahead basketball in the overtime period.
The strong play by Proviso East pushed the 10-2 Pirates up to 14th in the Chicago Sun-Times Super 25 rankings, up from 20th before the tournament began.
Coleman also was named to Second Team All-Tournament Team after averaging 14.8 points and seven rebounds per game in four games. Joining him was Proviso West freshman Rajan Roberts, who averaged 17.3 points per game during the tournament. Other notables on the All-Tournament Team included Daniel Johnson of Whitney Young, who was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player following a 21.5-point, seven-rebound per game performance, and Darrin Ames of Kenwood Academy, a Kansas State-commit who set a tournament single-game scoring record with 65 points in the Broncos’ 122-48 opening win over Southland College Prep.
Whitney Young High School claimed the tournament title with a 58-55 victory over Kenwood Academy, who was ranked second in the Chicago Sun-Times Super 25. Hammond Central (Indiana) won fifth place with a 56-42 win over Fenwick, while Michele Clark won the consolation title with a 67-64 victory over Bogan.
Watching the teams were college scouts from schools including North Carolina, Georgetown, Kansas State, DePaul, Ferris State and Missouri, as well as current Chicago Bull Ayo Dosunmu, who played in the Proviso West Tournament with Morgan Park High School in 2016, and other NBA players.
Other attendees included Ms. Arbdella "Della" Patterson, president of the District 209 Board of Education; Mrs. Theresa L. Kelly, vice president of the Board of Education; Mr. Rodney Alexander, member of the Board of Education; Superintendent of Schools Dr. James L. Henderson, Illinois House Speaker and former District 209 Board of Education President Emanuel “Chris” Welch, along with mayors from Proviso Township and other area school administrators. They were among several capacity crowds for 28 games over the course of four days, including a standing room only crowd for the tournament championship game between Kenwood and Whitney Young, who claimed their Proviso West Tournament title.
