5 questions and a shout out with LVHS senior Madelyn Jackson and Mr. Cody Pruitt
1. What or who inspired you to be a teacher?
I really found a place where all of my nerdy interests came together in my high school English class with Mr. Floyd, but I didn't know I wanted to teach until after I taught for a year in South Korea. I did it just to travel and see the world, but when I came back to the States I kept thinking about how I would teach certain books or lessons if I had the chance, and realized I needed to be a teacher.
I love to travel. I've been to 10 countries (I think), and my wife and I are going to South America for our honeymoon this summer.
Also, Mrs Stoner made me take this picture.
3. What is one of your favorite moments as a teacher?
A few years after he graduated, I got an email that said, "Mr. Pruitt, I just transferred to Austin College, and it's as hard as you said it was. What do I do?"
I gave him some professors in the education department to look up, and 3 years later, he graduated with his Masters (a better degree than mine!) in education. As far as I know, he's teaching at the same high school where I met him, almost 10 years ago.
Celebrating the five year anniversary of answering this question.
Really, though, I love the classroom- I'd like to be in a position where I can teach new teachers the things I've learned in doing this job, but ideally, I'd be able to do that and teach AP Lit as well. It's hard for me to imagine not sharing great writing with students.
5. What are some of your hobbies outside of school?I'm a musician- I play guitar and mandolin, primarily. I'm also a gamer, although I'm usually either a few months or years behind what people are playing. Otherwise, papers wouldn't get graded.
Shoutout from Madelyn:
Mr. Pruitt has helped me view literature in a whole new light and has encouraged me to expand my abilities as a writer. Before his class, writing essays and reading books for school was just something I had to do in order to pass a class, but now I'm able to apply an assignment to a topic that matters a lot to me and have it represent more than just a grade. He also has inspired me to dig deeper than the surface level and to stretch myself as a writer. Thanks to Mr. Pruitt, I can also never watch a movie or read a book without analyzing the hidden themes and literary devices, which is a blessing and a curse. Thank you for helping me grow as a writer and a student!

Things you 'sneed' to know...from our counselor, Sherri Sneed:
April is going to be another busy month as we are already one week into the last 9 weeks!
The Lago Vista Women’s Club will be conducting interviews on April 5th and 6th with many of our senior girls based on the scholarship applications they received. The girls will receive passes on Tuesday to let them know which day they will interview.
We will be having the College & Career Fair to be held the morning of April 20th at the high school. All grades 9-12 will have an opportunity to attend. This is a great opportunity for students to start thinking about their future goals. More details will be given soon!
Many have been asking about student schedules for next year. Below is the timeline for students to complete (or have already completed) their four year plans. They will be bringing those home for parents to sign off on them. (If you haven’t seen them based on the information below, please ask for them.) Their choice sheets, for next year, will be based on these 4 year plans.
The timeline for grades 9-11 four-year plans and choice sheets is as follows:
4 year review and planning for juniors was this week, March 29 & 30. Junior conferences will begin next week.
4 year review and planning for sophomores is next week, April 5 & 6.
4 year planning document and student led conferences for freshmen were March 7, 8, & 9.
The plan is for students to be given choice sheets on April 7 and they will be due back to Money Matters (for freshmen), English III (for juniors), or World History (for sophomores) on April 10 or 11 (A or B Day). All 4 year plans will be uploaded to students' Canvas pages as they are completed. Choice sheets will be based directly off those plans. All students will be scheduled to upload their choices to TxMyZone the week after Easter break. Parents will have an opportunity to review their child’s choices for next year once they are input.
Reminder: if your student calls or texts you about being sick, make sure they have seen the nurse first to avoid an unexcused absence.

important attendance information!
3 or more unexcused absences in a 4 week period - warning letter sent home.
7 or more unexcused absences in a 6 month period - warning letter sent home and Behavior Intervention Plan meeting called with the parents, student, and assistant principal.
10 or more unexcused absences in a 6 month period - truancy charges are filed. Parent, student and school administrator will be summoned to appear in truancy court.
Our campus goal is to reach 96% attendance each day. If a student is at school at 10:15 am, we receive funding for that student for that day. If they are not, we do not receive funding. For this reason, we ask that you plan all non-medical absences from school for times after 10:15 am.
Weird, but true, attendance fact: If your student is present for any part of the school day and leaves for a medical appointment, they won't get counted absent for that day as long as they bring a note. If they are absent for the entire day for a doctor's appointment, they will be counted absent.
Thanks for your support!
