Marks And Spencer
How they are being socially and environmentally friendly.
What is Plan A?
Plan A is a scheme that Marks And Spencer started in January 2007. Plan A covers all the social and enviromental issues relevant to their business. It was, and remains, an ambitious programme; one that requires fundamental and far reaching changes in the behaviour of millions of people worldwide. They called it Plan A because they wanted to make a statement that there is no Plan B when it comes to conserving the earth’s finite resources.
One Chance
They called it Plan A becuase they wanted to show this is the only chance and there is no back up plan.
Successful
Their Scheme has been successful, as they have made a massive impact on people views and made more people socially and environmentally aware.
Goals
These are the main goals Marks And Spencer's want to achieve.
What do Marks And Spencers do to help socially?
In many countries, a job working in a factory or farm producing product for the international market is a popular position. In some countries, however, workers face significant challenges to safe and productive work. Marks And Spencer’s don’t believe that this should mean that they move their business away from these locations but instead work to improve conditions where issues have been identified. This needs to be done by identifying countries and regions of greatest risk, as well as ensuring adherence to their monitoring and audit programme. Where issues are identified they set clear expectations and timelines for suppliers to work towards.
Shwopping Scheme
Shwopping is about bringing an old item of clothing into an M&S store with you. You can put your old items into a ‘Shwop Drop’ box. All clothing goes to their partners Oxfam, and they'll either resell it in one of their stores or on their website, forward it on to those who need it in the Third World, or recycle the fibres to make new material. Absolutely nothing goes to landfill. Oxfam will use the money raised to help people around the world overcome poverty. They have used celebrity endorsement when advertising they have Alisha Dickson and Joanna Lumley.
