Raptor Report
August 2020 Update
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Another exciting year at Rolling Hills is on the horizon! We are happy to have our students returning to school in just a few weeks whether it be online or face-to-face. We offer a special welcome to all the new students joining our Rolling Hills family this year, especially all the new 5K families!
We want our students to be happy, safe, and successful at Rolling Hills. We appreciate everyone that makes RHES a very special place to learn, work and grow. Students that know their family is interested in, and supports the school program will have fewer problems in school and enjoy greater academic success.
At Rolling Hills, we ROAR like Raptors.
Rolling Hills Guidelines for Success (The Raptor Way):
• Be Respectful
• Be Responsible
• Be Safe
We believe that communication among parents, students and teachers is critical in assuring student success. Please share with our teachers any information regarding your child that will help us better serve your family. As we foster connections with students, parents and community, an improved learning environment is created. Through the implementation of our writing and literacy curriculum the staff will be exposing students to new ways of thinking and problem solving. We will also continue to offer Project Lead the Way curriculum during Library STEM time with all grades this year. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We will be looking to incorporate units in computer programming, robotics and engineering while exposing our students to necessary 21st century skills. Additionally, Big Ideas Mathematics replaces Everyday Mathematics in grades 5 and 6 across the District. We look forward to another wonderful year of working together!
Enjoy your last few weeks of vacation. Hope to see you all soon!

MASD OPENING PLAN
At this time, we can release our initial plans for starting our 2020-21 school year.
As a reminder, families can also view our virtual learning option details on the Pandemic Information page of the district website.
Families choosing the virtual learning option for their child should do so by completing the Infinite Campus Parent Portal Annual Update by August 10. Families who do not select the virtual learning option will automatically be enrolled into their regular schools. Information about completing this was sent on July 14. Click here to review that information.
OPEN HOUSE - KINDERGARTEN AND NEW FAMILIES
To ensure the health and safety of our students and staff and to abide by the Waukesha County Health Department guidance limiting large group gatherings to 100 or fewer people, our elementary school open houses will look different this year.
Open House remains scheduled for Thursday, August 27, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm but will be for kindergarten and new families only. Families attending open house should plan on bringing your child's school supplies and any school day medications. Families with the last name A-M may attend from 5:00 - 6:00 pm and families with the last name N-Z may attend from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. Only enrolled children and parents/guardians may attend this year and masks will be required.
SCHOOL SUPPLY DROP-OFF DAYS
To allow our families to drop off their child's school supplies, two Supply Drop-Off Days have been established this year. On Monday, August 24, from 12:00 - 6:00 pm and on Friday, August 28, from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm, enrolled children and their parents/guardians may drop off their supplies in their labeled locker area. Masks will be required to enter the building. Student medications can also be dropped off during these times. Please be aware that teachers will not be available during our Supply Drop-Off Days.
The process will be as follows...
- Place all school supplies in a bag labeled with your child's first and last name.
- Place your child's school supplies in the locker labeled with your child's name. You will be receiving a description of the location and the number of your child's locker from your child's teacher prior to these drop-off days.
- Take any information the classroom teacher has left in the locker. Teachers may choose to communicate electronically as well.
- Grades K-3, Complete the Backpack Dismissal Tag at home and attach to your child's backpack for the first day of school (The tag will be in the locker and must include directions on bus route, pick-up or Kids Connection placement for the classroom teacher)

SCHOOL DAY DROP OFF & PICK UP OF ITEMS FOR STUDENTS
The same process will be in place for items needing to be picked-up. Arrange with the office which items need to be picked-up and an approximate time you will arrive. The office staff will see that the items are waiting on the table for you to retrieve.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS NEEDED
We anticipate shortages in substitute teachers this year. To help fill our needs, if you hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university you can receive a three-year short-term substitute license by completing a state-approved educator preparation program.
New this week, CESA 2 offers an online, self-paced course for only $150! Learn more at https://www.cesa2.org/programs/subtraining/.
CESA 1 is hosting educator preparation programs on August 10-11. Click here to learn more details including how to register!
Once you obtain your license, apply with Teachers on Call. If you have questions, email Susan Muenter.
