Third Grade in the News!
February 9th - February 13th
What We Are Learning This Week
PBL with all three teachers: Mr. Hilton helped us launch our third PBL for the year, this one is called Classroom Crashers! Be sure to ask your child all about it, we can't wait for you to see our final products during open house on March 5th!
Language Arts with Mrs. Trueblood: We will continue our
poetry unit this week by reading and writing various types of poetry. We are having fun sharing our poems. We have some awesome poets in third grade!
Please continue to have your child read for 30 minutes each night . We are working on strengthening our reading stamina.
Science with Mrs. Naragon: This week students will review that forces cause change and that energy exists in many forms. We will explore different forms of energy, including mechanical, light, sound, and heat/thermal in everyday life. We will also demonstrate and observe how position and motion can be changed by pushing and pulling objects to show work being done such as swings, balls, pulleys, and wagons. Lastly, we will observe forces such as magnetism and gravity acting on objects.
Math with Mrs. Moore: We are almost ready to move beyond area and perimeter. We will be working on more challenging problems of the two this coming week. Students will be asked to find the length of an unknown side of a rectangle or square when given the total perimeter. They will also be asked to find the area of an irregular shape like the one below. We will also begin moving into naming polygons and sorting/classifying their features.
Weekend Homework - Valentine's Box
Because we are having a grade level party, each class will hand out Valentine's in our own classroom. Please have your child decorate a small shoe box or bag for the valentine exchange. Make sure your child has an opening big enough to fit small cards/trinkets.
Valentines cards can be labeled with each child's name or left blank. Our classes have around 19 students in each class but unfortunately, we cannot send home a class list due to confidentiality. We can't wait to see the creative box your child comes up with!
Third Grade Valentine's Day Party!
Our wonderful third grade room moms have gotten together and have planned a LOVE-LY Valentine's Day Party, on Friday, Feb. 13th, 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm in the cafeteria.
We will have 5 different stations -
*Musical Hearts

We REALLY need YOUR help in the Lunch Room!
We have a new lunch volunteer sign up for the semester! Our lunch is from 11:15-11:45 on Monday - Thursday and 11:20-11:50 on Fridays!! We do not have any volunteers signed up for this coming week, we know your child would love to see you!
Media Production Challenge
Last fall, Austin Elementary offered an Engineering Design enrichment program after school on Thursdays. The program was put on my Jodi Schleter (CISD PBL Coach). A new version (Media Production Challenge) will be starting up soon. Participants will partner with former Dallas Cowboy Greg Ellis to create an actual production piece at his design studio.
