Online Idea Sharing Link
This is just a reminder that we have the Online Idea Sharing Google Form and Google Sheet. There are some really great ideas in there already, but I am sure there are a lot more out there.
Click here to submit your ideas!
The way it works is you fill out the Google Form if you have an idea you want to share. The idea can be subject specific or it can be an online teaching strategy (look for "Online Teaching Strategy" in the Subject drop down). After you submit your idea you will be prompted to click on the link to the responses page. This is where you can see all the other awesome ideas that are happening right now.
You will find the Google Form attached to this email. You can find the Responses Page here.
Please take the time to fill out the Google Form, no idea is too small! You never know who you will inspire or help out with your ideas.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you,

Faculty and Staff,
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week. You guys have done so much for our students. Thank you for all that you do.
One thing that I have noticed lately is that days fly by while a week feels like a month.
The grading procedure has been sent out. Thank you everyone for your help.
Bob Sanborn has requested certain teachers to begin their cleanout. If you have not heard from him, please wait until you do.
We are going to do another Senior Parade. This will be more of a Senior Photobomb Swingby. We need teachers to stop at 12th graders' homes, give them their graduation gown, wait till they put it on, and take a photo for graduation. If you want to participate you must stay socially distant from others and the graduate. I do not see this as a 6-10 car parade, but who knows maybe it should be. More info below.
Art Balzotti is gathering information and feedback about what student congregation areas will be in the new building. This will be done with the expectation that things are somewhat normal. His survey to faculty will go out in the near future. Please complete it when you get it.
We also will be looking at some other important topics that others are asking about. Erin Orcutt will be heading our Re-Entry Task Force, which will investigate what next year will look like from a health perspective.
There is lot going on now and into the weeks ahead. We will try to communicate everything, but please ask any questions if you have them.
Please stay well and keep updated with the information below.
Senior Photobomb Swingby
Ok, this time it will take a little more effort and coordination.
We need folks to volunteer to pick up graduation gowns early next week and then deliver them on Wednesday 5/13 or Thursday 5/14 (weather dependent). However, delivery will include waiting for seniors to put on the gown and take a picture for our Graduation ceremony. I think breaking this up to as many volunteers as possible will be best.
We want you to sign up for a town/area. I have a spreadsheet that breaks it down to town and village to make it easier for all of us. After signup s are complete, I will designate the addresses to a Town Captain to disseminate to the others.
Ok troops, whos in and who is ready for round 2. If so, sign up here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZOh8kLwY7GNNxg-c-fBht9NhlD54jVH8KyP_st1sCMc/edit?usp=sharing
We will make this happen for our Seniors. We will make this year unforgettable not forgettable... We will celebrate them. We will make them smile. We will, because they need us!!!!!!
Celebrate The Class of 2020 because they have vision.....

As for students being diagnosed and what teachers should do. I would suggest first ask ho they are feeling. Then share with them that if the symptoms are mild to stay engaged with their learning. If it is becoming more serious, then to take a break from their learning. However, they or family members should email in every day they are not feeling well enough to complete work, as if they were calling in sick. I would also share their name with Gretchen to ensure that the child is well and if they need support. As for students whose family members are affected, please be compassionate. They may need to take on further responsibility at home. It also becomes very difficult for the parent to be the disciplinarian at home. Students should have an intrinsic desire to do the work, but we need to realize that some do not have that for whatever reason.
For some families, there is a real fear not just being affected by the virus but also finances, nutrition, and other health concerns. Please understand that some families are truly struggling.
We will release a grading procedure for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year later tonight. This will be an agenda item for our staff meeting tomorrow. Please review and bring questions to meeting tomorrow.
I want to also share that DESE has provided some new guidelines and decisions on moving forward. Competency Determination for current seniors may be determined by current or previous class grades in the subject matter of their deficiency. Please see the decision in the link below.
The Commissioner has not made a decision on underclassmen's competency determination. In this morning's briefing, he alluded to making a decision in the coming months.
Please stay well and keep updated with the information below.
Midterm Comments Due Thursday, April 30th
Previously sent on 4.23.2020
After consideration of the new last days for students, particularly seniors (Thank you, Scott), we have adjusted the dates for midterm comments. The closing date for comments is April 24th for all students. This allows for three weeks of Gold Cycle classes and two weeks of Maroon Cycle classes. Comments for all students must be entered in SchoolBrains by April 30th. This is a hard deadline. Please use the updated comments key Found here. We are asking faculty to use the new Remote Learning Midterm Comments, as this will ensure consistency. You will see an additional comment that has been added for students without the Internet (Thank you, Francesca).
Only one comment per student is required. Please use caution with additional comments if you choose to use them. Praise is certainly encouraged for those that wish to do that.
We appreciate your diligence. We understand a lot of feedback has already been expressed to parents and students. This documents that feedback in an official manner.
Thank you,
The Administrative Team

Senior Parade
We are doing a Senior Parade. It is a little hard so we have broken up into towns and areas of Cape Cod. We want all CCT community members t to participate. This is a social distancing parade.
Below are the Team Captains for each town/area. Please contact them directly to find out where and when to meet for a parade. Some info is listed below. We are breaking each town into smaller segments to make it easier and get more folks involved.
There is alos a google hangout for 11:50 on Tuesday so people can participate. This will be for people to share their experience in their car, we may need to mute a little bit. I am not sure how that will work, but worth a try.

Virtual Community Service for our Senior Citizens
Are you looking for some community service hours, something to include on college applications or just a way to help others? Seniors are feeling isolated and alone due to Covid-19 so we wanted to send them some love by creating a YouTube channel just for them. We are looking for students (and teachers and parents) to submit a 3-5 minute video that will be shared with the elderly in Senior Care Facilities and through other means like Meals on Wheels.
Here are some suggestions for a video: Read a story or poems; tell a story about your life or a moment in history; a musical performance; share with us a collection; show, teach or tell us about one of your talents--cooking, juggling, art sports, film-making, etc. If you want to see some examples go to our channel www.bit.ly/SeniorVisits. (While you are there Subscribe to our YouTube channel and share it with an elderly family member that might enjoy it.) Start your video by introducing yourself and describing what you plan to share. Students do not need to share their last name. Remember to keep it between 3 and 5 minutes. You can submit your video by going to the Generus COVID-19 volunteering page.
If you would like to volunteer further, consider joining our Students to Senior leadership team where we will work to contact Senior Facilities and offer them our "Video Visits". If you would like to learn more about this opportunity please sign up at the Generus COVID-19 volunteering page and we will be in touch with more information.

Decisions were made today by the Governor for schools to remain closed for the 2019-2020 school year. This leads to more questions than answers. Over the coming days, we will try to provide some guidance to staff, faculty, and students what the immediate future will look like fo the Cape Cod Tech Community. Whether it is graduation, losing spring sports, ninth grade placement or jus picking up some items form the school, everyone is wondering what to do. Please understand these are unprecedented times. We are trying to make thoughtful decisions as we proceed. It may take a few days for a response to what some may view as a quick question. There are no quick questions at this time, as the answer has repercussions and precedents that may need to be considered.
Please keep the questions coming and know we are working hard to answer them.
I am hearing from teaches that they have student engagement percentage concerns. I will share that we all want 100% student engagement. However, the numbers that I am hearing from teachers ranging from 60-90% surpass what other principals have shared across the state. This reflects the relationships that you have built with your students. Geat work, and keep striving for 100%.
However, for students who are not staying connected with their learning, we will continue to reach out to their families. Please maintain the Student Not Completing Work Spreadsheet. I have utilized this list to send emails, phone calls and texts to parents and students. A link to the list is below.
Students have shared some confusion about assignments. Information and a solution will be list below.
I hope everyone stays well.
Thank you,
Billy
Superintendent's 4.21.2020 Message
To All Members of the Cape Cod Tech Community,
This is your Superintendent, Bob Sanborn. As you may have already heard Governor Baker announced that Massachusetts schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. However, Cape Cod Tech continues the educational process through our remote learning environment. It is imperative that your student continues accessing their work and their teachers during this time for educational as well as social-emotional reasons. As you know the last day of school is now June 15th for students and our amazing seniors' last day is May 22nd! Cape Cod Tech's mission carries on...but online. We will be in touch over the next several weeks with information about end of year activities especially as it pertains to our seniors so stay tuned for virtual invitations in the near future. To our seniors, it goes without saying that we did not want your last year at CCT to end this way but your resilience and persistence during these challenging times have been inspiring. Thank you all...
Assignment Confusion
Students shared at multiple student meetings that they were getting multiple assignments on the same day, and many were not sure f they were to complete everything or if they were for future dates. Remember, what you see in your classroom on your computer is not exactly how students see it on their devices. Melissa Jones shared how she has avoided the confusion. She names the assignment with the date that it is due, the assignment name and if it is 1 of 2 or 1 of 3 or 1 of 1. This allows the student to quickly identify what they need to complete for the day. Please understand that although they may technology natives, they may struggle in other areas that make this whole online learning challenging and confusing. Therefore, please use this strategy to help support the students. I have tried to replicate it a fictitious classroom and have taken a snapshot below to help give teachers a visual understanding of how to use this practice.
Also, if teachers can keep their posts in the cycle they are supposed to be posting or at least until the very end of the preceding cycle. Meaning today is the start of the gold cycle. If teachers who only have their students on the maroon cycle could limit their post till at least the end of the cycle it would be helpful. Some students reported getting assignments for their next cycle in the first few days of a current cycle.

Senior Sign-Out
To All,
The decision to forgo Spring Break has led to some unintended consequences. One of them is the extension of the year on seniors, who typically do not make up snow days.... one of those senior perks. This has led to many seniors sharing their frustrations at their class meeting yesterday. They have been affected most dramatically than other classes, as their end of year celebrations are in isolation in their homes. COVID-19 has played havoc with their futures. Once-seamless plans involving career and/or college now are uncertain due to economic and public health factors. Now, more than ever, seniors need this time to determine their next steps, as we have personally heard from students who are financially struggling due to the effects of Covid. A recent article on CNN explains how much this has affected the graduating class of 2020: https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/16/us/teens-coronavirus-coping-wellness-trnd/index.html
Therefore, it has been decided to roll back Senior Sign Out to May 22nd as a compromise to those seniors. Senior Signout was scheduled for May 29th. Many asked for their Spring Break to still exist, but we felt this would compromise the other classes and their work. Some students suggested ending earlier than May 29th. We felt that this would be a good compromise. We will be sharing this with students. I wanted teachers to see this first, so you could plan for the end of the year.
Thank you for preparing for this change. In essence, it should not affect curriculum plans as Spring Break will add four Gold days to the year. May 26-29 are also Gold days, so there is no change in the length of the academic cycle year.
As for finals, I will be sending another email addressing that shortly. Please stay tuned.
I hope everyone is well and staying healthy.
Thanks,
The Administrative Team
(Bob, Erin, Kate, Annie, Anne, JR and Billy)
Online Finals
To All,
After much discussion, the Administrative Team has decided to preclude students from any online final assessments. Formative assessments are encouraged to prepare for future instruction and curriculum development. At this time we are out of school until May 4th. However, this decision will stand for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This may affect how you prepare for the remainder of this year. Therefore, we felt it was necessary to get this information out to you as soon as possible. We thank you for your diligence and hard work during this challenging time.
Stay safe and stay healthy,
The Administrative Team
(Bob, Erin, Kate, Anne, Annie, JR and Billy)
Faculty and Staff,
We held two Virtual Parent Meetings held last Thursday. They seemed very successful in providing information and answering questions. If you were unable to join us, a video link to the recorded virtual meeting is available below.
The meeting was well-received. Parents were extremely appreciative of the work and communication that you have been providing. Great job!
Here are some shared responses from the chat:
"I have been overly impressed with how the TECH has responded to our new situation. Professionalism and compassion have always been evident throughout my children's time at the TECH. Thank you for all that you are doing."
"All I can say is Amazing! Your communication to adults and students has been great. Thank you for all your organization, answers, time, and support. You have adapted and meeting the needs. Keep up the great work. And, Kuddos on your MCAS position!"
"Thank you for all of the information on a regular basis and thank you to all of the supportive teachers! The teachers have been wonderful in getting back to me in a timely fashion and they have been more than supportive and accommodating to my son's learning endeavors during this uncertain time. Thank you again and stay healthy!"
There was some other parent feedback and requests that we wanted to share with all of you. Parents have requested that teachers who are posting their assignments for the day do so prior to at least 10 am. When students are getting these late in the day it is not providing them enough time to complete prior to the next day. Parents have also requested that if you are grading the work, that you do post the grade on Schoolbrians. They would like to be sure that their students are working up to your expectations. Parents were amazed by and very thankful for your work. I want to say thank you as well. You have been able to balance this online learning remarkably. I am so proud to work with all of you.
As we utilize new strategies Kate Clemens has provided guidance to share with all of your students. Please make sure you publish this to your students in some way or form. See the helpful document below.
Teachers, please maintain the Student Not Completing Work Spreadsheet. I have utilized this list to send emails, phone calls and texts to parents and students. A link to the list is below.

Two weeks without students. With the Governor's decision not to return until May 4th, this is going to be a school year to remember. Over the last two days, some state guidance has been released. I have included that guidance below. I have also included a Q & A sheet that seems to provide a great way to answer questions that everyone is asking.
We have heard from multiple families that they are having bandwidth issues, device sharing issues, no printer access, and just difficulties access online learning. Therefore, all assignments must be given at least 24 hours to complete. Some teachers have put a 2:30 same day deadline on work. This will no longer be allowed. If your class is an even day, then work would not be due until 8am the next day, which would be an odd day.
We also will be altering the schedule for 10th-grade math and ELA and 9th-grade science. They had been meeting every day during academic weeks, but now will go odd-even days like other classes. This will allow for a less stressful situation for students.
We have whittled our internet numbers down to just a few students. See the list below.
If you have any questions, please reach out. We want to answer everything we can. Please understand that questions can not always be responded to right away.
Be safe and be well,
Billy
2nd Trimester Grades and Report Cards
Mr. Sanborn's 3/25/2020 Message
This is your Superintendent Bob Sanborn. As you probably have already heard, Governor Baker has ordered all schools to remain closed through the month of April with a return to school on May 4th at the earliest. Everything we have in place for online education remains. It is essential for all students to check with their teachers via google classroom to keep the educational process going during this extended break from our school. Student participation and effort are mandatory and expected. Our teachers and support staff are going above and beyond to provide an online learning environment and we need the assistance of Cape Cod Tech parents and guardians to ensure your student's education progresses during this unusual time. While the school is closed, our staff is accessible to assist you via email and phone. Thank you and stay tuned in the coming days for further updates. Please stay safe and healthy.
Do we grade students and what do we tell them?
The work and activities assigned by teachers are formative assessments to gauge student learning and participation while students are out of school. Participation is mandatory and, at this point in time, will be reflected in all students’ 3rd term report cards.
How do we grade the students' work?
- I think some teachers are grading it as classwork with participation grades assessing the students' effort. This I thought was a good idea. I also heard that folks are doing straight participation grades. That works too. However, if a student does not complete it, I would not give students a 0% until you spoke with their families and confirmed that there is not an issue at home, whether internet, illness or family responsibilities.
I received some valid concerns from folks about reaching out with personal phones. Therefore, if students are not doing work and you are not comfortable with calling, please email the student and parent first and if still no response please update their name to the chart in the link below. Before doing so, please be sure the student's name is not already on the list. On 3/26 we sent an electronic all call to the specific households.
Here is the Google sheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12_bmw4PGCRB3gZB7-6G2t1FPVk80AyR0nSacXc5LCl8/edit?usp=sharing
- At this time, I would refrain from assessing student learning based upon online instruction. Our students are hands-on learners and many need more than a video or worksheet to truly grasp a concept.
DESE Commissioners Update 3.26.2020
Here is a key highlight:
Recommended remote learning model:
- We recommend that districts support students to engage in meaningful and productive learning for approximately half the length of a regular school day. We expect this learning to take place via a combination of educator-directed learning and student self-directed learning.
- We strongly recommend that districts and schools focus on reinforcing skills already taught this school year and applying and deepening these skills. We recognize that in some cases, teachers and students may wish to continue with new material, particularly at the high school level. In these cases, districts should consider equity of access and support for all students.
- The individual student experience will vary depending on student age, individual and family needs, access and capacity for remote learning (including access to technology and internet), and the ongoing health of students, families, and staff.
Spring Sports Update from MIAA
Update on Spring Sport Season
March 30, 2020
The MIAA Board of Directors voted to amend the start of the 2020 spring sports season in light of recent mandates from Governor Baker and recommendations from governing health agencies. The updated start date for the 2020 spring season is May 4, 2020.
Additionally, the MIAA Board of Directors voted to have completion of regular season and tournament games by June 27, 2020 with consideration of June 28, 2020 for weather and facility needs.
Also
The first team competition may not start until after the seventh calendar day after the start of the 2020 spring season
Thank you for your patience while dealing with this very fluid situation. Be well.

Faculty and Staff,
Day four... I hope everyone is holding up ok. Reminder we go online with Educational Opportunities on Monday, March 23rd. If you are having any problems, I will be on my computer all day. Please email me. If you have my number and all of you do in previous emails, text or call me. (I do not want to post it here as this newsletter is a website that the public could find.)
I will say I am loving the parent homeschooling memes where parents have suspended their kid, they are willing to pay teachers a million dollars or where parents state they got fired from teaching for something completely inappropriate. They have brought a cynical smile to my face and sometimes even a sinister laugh. I am going to say it though, I miss the students. I hope we finish with this soon. Although I usually am in my office at my computer, it is always nice to know that I could pop out and go see what everyone was doing and learning. Life is too quiet now. Well with four kids and a dog in a house smaller than our future science rooms in the new building, quiet may not be the best word for my current environment. Whatever the case, I miss the 600 teenagers we call our students.
I hope you are well. We will see what Monday brings....
Resources from The School Library
I have spent the past few days creating content and brainstorming ways to support students and staff over the next several weeks. I have started a list of resources on the library webpage: www.capetechlibrary.com.
The content and resources include: how to register for an online Boston Public Library card, which will provide students with print and digital media and articles, streaming services, podcasts, and eBooks. It is a huge resource for remote learning. Any student with a Massachusetts address is eligible. I highly recommend that you get a card as well because of what it offers.
Also, I put together content for teachers that includes Reference Guides for specific units such as 12 Angry Men that some English classes are reading and a mythology reference guide (Francesca's students are reading a novel that touches upon this). If you look at these guides under the "Ref Guide" tab on the left sidebar of the library's webpage and think that this is something that could help you deliver a more effective lesson, please reach out for help and I'd be happy to create and/or curate information for you. It helps students when information is kept in a central place.
I have also put together a Technical Reference list that has 20 articles on the value of technical education. The articles are under the "Technical Reference" tab on the left sidebar of the library's webpage. These articles could be used with a writing assignment to keep students reading and writing. They are high-interest articles that students can relate to personally and ones that they can write informed responses to.
For those of you assigning research papers--the password for the databases is on the library webpage under the "Databases" link on the left sidebar. It is also under Teacher Resources. It's "books123." Students need the password when signing in at home. There's also a tutorial on how to use the databases. Please reach out if you'd like me to walk you through it over the phone.
I believe that it's important to present students with some uplifting videos (their preferred means of consumption) and will present a "Video of the Day." This will be a quick 5-10 minute video of worth that teachers can use to supplement other lessons or use it as a quick writing assignment. I have several lined up that will begin Monday and believe that they're a great way to engage students and make them think. Videos that are not going to be seen on TikTok but that will still get a little interest.
I am available to help you in any way. If you feel as though the library website could be useful to you and need me to upload something to it please reach out. I can help you with research needs, article searches, and lesson and unit supplements to make content more engaging for online learning.
Hoping everyone is doing well,
Amy

Grading and Curriculum Expectations of Online Work
As for the expectation of what the assignment should be, teachers should provide a work assignment that takes students enough time and thought that may compare the amount of work in class. This work could be new information or a review of old information. Math teachers may assign a 10-15 minute Khan Academy video and 10-15 math problems to go with it. English teachers may assign a chapter or two in a book and have guided questions or analytical open response questions. Theory teachers may have a video and expect students to diagram a common diagnostic problem form the field that coordinates with the video. It would be something to keep students engaged and not lost during this time out of school.
