The Shoulders We Stand On
Someone You Should Know
Dr. J. David Bowick
Dr. J. David Bowick taught in Philadelphia, Pa prior to moving to Los Angeles, California. He was principal of Manual Arts High School and an accomplished and respected educator as reported by his peers and students. His student population was 2,400 students and 300 staff members. Manual Arts High School had seven buildings on a 16-acre campus. It is reported that he believed "You can't run an inner city school from behind a desk tucked away in an office". He also believed that there were extra problems with minority schools that require a greater sensitivity and a more than 9 to 5 effort. Dr. Bowick received his Master's degree in Liturgical Music from USC. and later received his Ph. D in school administration at Claremont University in California.
Dr. Bowick, after leaving Los Angeles, moved to Houston, Texas, where he joined the Houston Independent School District in the capacity of Deputy Superintendent for Human Resources. He was in charge of the the fifth largest educational Human Resources Department in the country. He was responsible for restructuring the department and training administrators in new procedures for interviewing and hiring employees throughout the school district. During his years in Houston, he was named the first president of TABSE, as the organization formed in 1986, following the NABSE National Conference in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Bowick left Houston after a short and successful period and moved to the East Coast it is reported, but contact with him was lost following his departure from Houston. His leadership qualities were obviously some of the reasons he served as the first TABSE president. No other information could be obtained concerning Dr. J. David Bowick, for purposes of further highlighting his impressive educational career.
