Grit
I sent you an earlier email explaining our new behavior initiative. Please take the time to watch both videos so that you will be able to talk with your students. This is the plan for the coming weeks:
- Have a Monday morning meeting with your class discussing Grit and what it means. Give students examples of what Grit looks like in your classroom.
- During the day when you see a child displaying Grit, call myself and Mr. White on the walkie stating the child's name and that they are showing Grit. We will come immediately to your room.
- We will take the student and celebrate with them in a way that will not interfere with your teaching.
- We will follow the same pattern that we did with breach. You will call us on the walkie for any students showing grit immediately for the week of Nov. 14th and the week of the 28th. Now, make sure you look for these students. Be as quick to call us for these students as we were for those students breaching.
- We will begin Grit recess the week of Dec. 5th and continue it the week of Dec. 12th.
Again, we are focusing on student behavior, but this time hoping to teach Grit and recognize those hard working students. You must continue to insist on respect in your classroom with your behavior management system and contacting parents.
Our hope is that we will have both respectful and "gritty" students!

Our Art Classes and Mrs. Dowell
Cedar Grove Elementary students participate in statewide art project, the S.C. Butterfly Collaborative This community arts integration project was developed and directed by Elaine Quave, SCGSAH visual arts faculty member. Quave will visit participating schools throughout the state to work directly with the students. "In these one-hour sessions, I cover science standards, teaching them about Monarch ecology and their endangered migration patterns, while also reviewing design principles such as pattern, rhythm, and symmetry as they paint their butterfly wings," explained Quave. Quave also brings Monarch caterpillars to show the students. "They love the caterpillars! It's a great way to get them engaged and more in touch with why we're doing this," said Quave. "This was a wonderful experience for our students," said Dowell. "They thoroughly enjoyed the project and are excited to be a part of this community collaboration."
WILLIAMSTON, S.C.- Fifth graders in Heather Dowell's art class at Cedar Grove Elementary learned about Monarch butterflies, while also participating in a statewide, student art project called the S.C. Butterfly Collaborative, presented by the S.C. Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH).
Over 2,000 fifth grade students throughout South Carolina are painting their own versions of Monarchs on vinyl sheets that will be hung in a 20-foot mobile to be exhibited in March at EdVenture Museum in Columbia, S.C.
