"Pearl's Posse"

Shirley (Pearl) Cleveland's Story

In the Fall of 2007, Pearl was diagnosed with a small, malignant tumor, low grade, on her bladder. It was stage 1 and the plan was to watch it with check-ups every 3 months. Another small tumor was found in 2010 and this tumor was excised, and she continued to have check ups every three months. In June 2013, however, a new stage 2 tumor was found in the lining of the muscle wall of the bladder. It was determined that Pearl's bladder would need to be removed to prevent further spreading of the cancer.

Upon removal this Summer, a new bladder was constructed from parts of her small intestine. The doctors felt that the cancer was contained within the bladder and that the follow up procedure will be annual CT scans. She will also not have to undergo radiation or chemo, which is good news. Her new bladder is expected to perform eventually with exercise and time. It is anticipated that she has a 95% chance of being cured. Her rehabilitation is expected to take 6-8 weeks. Pearl will be arriving home on Monday, Aug. 19th and we have set up meal delivery schedules for her. Her work schedule is indefinite as driving, climbing stairs, stamina, etc. all need to be comfortable and natural for her before she can go back to work.

It's at times like this that friends and acquaintances want to help, but really don't know what to do. We have put together an "on-line fundraiser" called "Pearl's Posse" (to the rescue!) - so that we can ease her financial burden in some way. My name is Barbie Cottrell and I have known Shirley (Pearl) for the better part of the last 30 years as she has been a dear friend of my parents (Bill & Carolyn Hayes) and mine. The picture of her on this flyer was taken at my wedding 21 years ago!!! (I know . . . it's a great pic!) I am an independent stylist with Stella & Dot, a fabulous and affordable jewelry and accessories company and I have had great success with this type of online fundraiser for others who are experiencing financial difficulties due to cancer. I lost my own husband to the disease over 12 years ago, and since then I have made it my mission to help those going through the same circumstances in any way that I can.

So here's how it works - we have chosen a few items from Stella & Dot that have special meaning to give love, light, hope and prayers to Pearl while she is recovering from this difficult ordeal. These can be worn or shared/gifted to others as a reminder to send healing thoughts and prayers to Shirley while she is recovering. While these items have special meaning - Stella & Dot has a huge selection of fabulous gifts/accessories and we've just come out with an amazing line of handbags, totes, travel bags, tech cases and so many other items along with our fabulous jewelry. Think about any gift giving opportunities that you have coming up - weddings, birthdays, holidays, etc. We are celebrity loved and editor adored, so you will see S&D products in all of the Fall Fashion magazines!!! All purchases will go to this fundraiser! I am donating 100% of my proceeds to Pearl to be used to help ease the financial burden that this illness has caused her. If you have any questions or would like help in placing your order, please feel free to email me at bcottrell@sopris.net or call 970.948.2584 and I will be happy to help you. This fundraiser will stay "open" for 1 month, until September 14th - so please pass this along to any family or friends who you think might want to help.
