Oak Grove Elementary
November 2018
Message from Principal Landon
Dear Oak Grove Families:
It is hard to believe that we have already wrapped up the first quarter and now we are headed towards parent conferences and the holidays! We have had an extremely exciting, fun filled fall here at Oak Grove and I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of these celebrations and provide updates as we enter the month of November.
On behalf of the entire staff, I want to extend my gratitude and appreciation for the generosity and support with the 2018 Jogathon. We raised over $7,000 because of the hard work of our students and donations from the Medford community and beyond. What made this Jogathon so special? It took place after our TRACK DEDICATION CEREMONY, and seeing our students participate on our new track was a moment we will cherish forever. We appreciate all the work and efforts made to raise the money necessary to make all of this possible, thank you!
Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 19th and 20th. The teachers greatly appreciate this time with you. We all can agree that students perform better both academically and socially when families are involved with their educational journey.
For October, the area of focus for the 7 HABITS OF HAPPY KIDS was BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND. We promoted the importance of planning ahead and setting goals. We want our students to do things that have meaning and make a difference, and to understand that each student is an important part of the classroom. As always, we want all of our students to look for ways to be a good citizen.
For November, the HAPPY HABIT will be PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST! Which means doing the most important things in life by being clear about your priorities and acting on them.
In closing, we are all so very grateful for all the boundless things in life we are blessed with, and for all of the wonderful people like you that we are fortunate to know. Please find true joy in celebrating Thanksgiving, as we show gratitude for all our loved ones while spending time with our families during this holiday.
With appreciativeness,
Liz Landon
Parent Teacher Conferences
A Parent Teacher Conference helps communicate your child's successes in the classroom. The conversations offer specific ideas of how to improve/maximize your child's performance in school both socially and academically. Parent teacher conferences are a safe platform to make a lasting bond and to increase the likelihood of academic success for your student. Establishing an honest and productive relationship with your child's teacher can help increase the likelihood of academic success. Most importantly, strong parent involvement will send a positive message to your child.
With this in mind, OAK GROVE is so excited to announce that we will be having Parent Teacher Conferences on November 19th from 11am to 7pm, and November 20th from 7am to 3pm. Each family will have twenty minutes with your child's assigned teacher in person at our school or via a phone call.
This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with your child's teacher - do not miss it!

Turkey Fun Facts
1) The color of a turkey’s head and throat will change depending on his mood. When a male turkey is excited, his head will turn blue. When he is feeling stressed, his head will turn bright red.
2) A wild turkey’s gobble can be heard up to one mile away.
3) Ben Franklin wanted the turkey, rather than the bald eagle, to be the national bird of the United States.
4) A turkey’s gender can be determined from its droppings — males produce spiral-shaped poop while females produce “J” shaped poop.
5) Wild turkeys can run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and fly as fast as 55 miles per hour.
6) Wild turkeys sleep in trees away from predators — this is natural roosting behavior that even domesticated turkeys will try to do.
7) There are approximately 5,500 feathers on an adult wild turkey, including 18 tail feathers that make up the male’s distinct fan.
