Curriculum Directors' Meeting

October 2019

Clarity is a Leaders Best Friend!

Feedback is the breakfast of champions and clear expectations are the foundation for feedback. How clear are you with your staff? Take the quiz!

1. Do staff know your expectations for __________?

2. Do you provide examples? non examples?

3. Do you have non-negotiables? Do they know what they are?

4. Do you set due dates and deadlines?

5. Do you put it in writing?

6. Do you monitor around your expectations? Review?

Clarity is leaderships best friend. The clearer we are about what the expectations are for staff (and students) the more likely they will meet those expectations. When staff do not, then we can refer back to expectations with specific feedback.

Student-Centered Coaching-October 22 and 23

Student-Centered Coaching is an evidence-based instructional coaching model that shifts the focus from ‘fixing’ teachers to collaborating with them to design instruction that targets student outcomes. Shifting coaching towards a data-driven approach increases the efficacy of teachers, coaches, and most importantly our students.

Participants will learn concrete strategies for implementing a coaching model that is grounded in student evidence. This will include an introduction to the core practices for student-centered coaching. We will also explore how principals and district leaders can take an active role in leading a coaching effort.

6-12 Essential Literacy Practices

The purpose of this set of essential instructional practices for grades 6 through 12 is to improve Michigan students’ academic literacies and content learning at the secondary level. Professional development throughout the state can focus on these research-supported literacy instructional practices for regular use in the classroom.

Expert research suggests that 10 sets of practices outlined in this document can have a positive impact on both literacy development and conceptual learning of content. The consistent use of these practices in every Michigan classroom can make a measurable, positive difference in student learning and improve the state’s literacy achievement.

The document is available at

The ISD ELA Leadership group is working on creating resources for the ELA portion of the document.

VIP Tours

In an effort to keep the students safe, walk-ins will not be allowed. Anyone wishing to come and take a look at this great event will need to be preregistered. We will have people on-hand to provide guided tours to our guests! Feel free to invite whomever you wish. However, please note that the first and third time slots for tours will be much less chaotic, as we have far fewer students coming in those sessions. Help us share the word about all of the hard work we have ALL put in to make this event epic!

Also, for those of you whose schedule may not allow you to come as a volunteer, but you want to come tour the event, please register as well.
