Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade

Hustle and Bustle...
There's a lot of hustle and bustle happening in Room 9! Having only three weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter Break makes us realize how much we need to accomplish to wrap up our first semester of learning.
We took a Reading Comprehension test today. I will grade it and return it to your child on Monday, December 9. Be sure to ask your child to see his/her data found in Google Sheets (reading data on spreadsheet), Google Keep (my reading conference notes), and Google Drive (9 Week reading goal).
Our SEL (social-emotional learning) Skill this month is all about self-regulation (aka SELF-CONTROL). We discussed the meaning and how to improve this if it is a struggle - We addressed self-regulation in the following situations: having tantrums/meltdowns, waiting patiently in line, transitions between activities, acting silly or out of control, being in close proximity to others, and impulsivity. If you would like me to have a one-on-one conversation with your child about any of these behaviors you are seeing at home, I am happy to do that in private. Sometimes having a teacher or trusted adult other than mom or dad discuss behavior, helps immensely.
I am really looking forward to the Holiday Party in a few weeks. Sounds like Melanie Urban has been in contact with some of you. If you have questions, feel free to email me and I will pass them on to Melanie.
We had a great week in Room 9! Thank you for sharing your lovelies with me each day!
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your weekend! Go COLTS!!

Room 9 Celebrations
A few student highlights from our week:
- Reid asked me if he could have a timer to time himself completing an activity in math (I think it was math). He told me he wanted to, "ramp it up!"
- Chris gave Reid a wonderful compliment in Community Circle. He announced to the class that, "Reid has such a great imagination and is one cool kid!" Isn't that sweet?
- Brandt helped Chris clean out his desk during our weekly desk cleaning today.
- I love how Gabby leads in a quiet and respectful way. She does unexpected tasks around the classroom without being told or wanting recognition for it.
- It's always a pleasure for me to conference with Phoebe about her writing. Due to her excellent listening skills, she comes to me prepared with her materials and has followed directions on all the assignments I've given her so it makes it easy for me to instruct her and move her forward in her writing.
- Who knew that Maren is an "excellent sewer (seamstress)"? She got a compliment during Community Circle for her sewing skills.
- I am so proud of how Evie perseveres through difficult tasks every single day. A few days ago she had an angry/confused/yucky look on her face as I was teaching a difficult math skill. Instead of giving up, she made up her mind she was going to learn it and she SHE DID!!!

Next Week - December 9-13
Reading: Nonfiction
- We will focus on narrative non-fiction next week, focusing specifically on biographies.
Math: Unit 4 - Operations
Has your child brought his/her Math homework home and seemed confused on how to complete the problems? If this has happened to you, there are a few different reasons for this:
- The questions/problems on the Homelink are worded differently than the way the skill was taught in class.
- The problems are more challenging than the ones we practiced in class (although, I usually give more challenging practice problems in class than the problems in the math journal).
- Your child did not give his/her best listening during instruction. This happens, occasionally, but if your child comes home confused about the math Homelink on a frequent basis, you might reach out to me to see if listening could be a factor.
Here is what is planned for next week:
- Lots of work on figuring area and perimeter of polygons.
- Measurement
Please encourage your child to practice his/her multiplication for 5 minutes each night. I graded the timed fact tests that we took today. I will pass them back on Monday. I was very happy with the number of students that passed their current facts.
Writing: Information Writing (Expository)
- We are plugging away at our information writing pieces. Students are using their organizer to construct their written essay. We will publish them using a computer program called Adobe Spark.
- Thank you, Kelly Ilardi, for coming in and volunteering your time to help us grow as writers. We really appreciate your help!
- If you are interested in helping students in writing, you are always welcome! Writing instruction is from 11:00-11:45 each day.
Word Study:
We are working on spelling word wall (high frequency) words from memorization. We are also reviewing the semester one skill words. We play games like Sparkle, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and $100,000 Pyramid to practice.
Social Studies: Unit 12 Economy - Providing Public Services
We will research the public services found in the city of Carmel. How do these services help our community run more smoothly and effectively!
