P-TECH at Watervliet Weekly Update
September 14, 2018
Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) Substitute for Living Beings?
This is the question that the P-TECH students began to examine this week. Throughout the unit, students will collect evidence to support their position regarding AI. The culminating activity will be a debate on the topic.
This week the content covered included:
- ELA - Students practiced close reading strategies as they began the unit's book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? They also annotated informational texts on AI to determine the author's position.
- Science - Students examined the characteristics of living things and looked at the structure and function of the cells that make up organisms.
- Guest Speaker - Peter Ottavio, Director of Engineering for EYP Architecture and Engineering, talked to students about how his company uses AI. Mr. Ottavio also discussed the need for job candidates who have a background in computer science and are able to work as part of a team.
Math and Game Design
Future Ready Framework
T - Technology Leadership
E - Empowerment
C - Collaboration
H - Humanitarianism
The norms and expectations of the P-TECH program are based on these skills. Students have begun to meet with Mr. Honsinger, our school counselor, to discuss their goals for improving in these areas.
