Growing as writers, readers, mathematicians, and scientist
Writers:
As writers we have been learning that Narritive writers write about small moments from their lives. Over the next two weeks we will pick a topic and live out the writing process from planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. I am so excited for how much our writers have grown already and cannot wait to see how the bloom over the next two weeks! How you can help at home: Ask your student what their seed idea is and how they are growing it. If you can, help them remember important details from that small moment. Also encourage your writer to write down special moments that happen to them over the next couple of weeks.
Readers:
We have been learning that reading is THINKING. Readers think about what is happening, what did happen, and what might happen. We are still finding and reading books that feel fun and easy that we love!
How you can help at home:
Ask your reader how they were thinking in the book they read: "What happened?" "What do you think might happen next?" "Why do you think that?"
Scientist:
We finished up or study of matter! Wahoo! I am so impressed at everything our scientist noticed, named, and learned. Also, great job preparing them for their first 3rd grade science test! I was so impressed with how hard they worked how well they were able to show me what they learned!
We will be moving from studying science to studying South Carolina History for the next four weeks. I am so excited for us to discover so many new things about our state and Native Americans!
How you can help at home:
Have conversations about different places you've traveled in the state and how those places are similar and or different from where we live! This will really help your student connect what we will be learning about the different regions of our state.
Mathematicians:
As mathematicians we have been studying addition! We have used base 10 blocks to help us combine ones, tens, and hundreds. We learned that sometimes when you combine ones you get ten or more so you have to put your tens with your tens. This week we will noticed sometimes you have 10 or more tens and that makes a hundred so you have to regroup your hundreds with your hundreds.
How you can help at home:
Have your student solve two and three digit addition problems and ask them what they are doing and why. Also, practice fact fluency with flash cards or math games. Your students know two math games (penny plate and addition flash) that can easily be done at home. There are also tons of fluency apps available on mobile devices.
