Principal's Message
ELK Family,
What is CHARACTER? We always hear many different definitions and see many different forms. Students exhibit character everyday at BHS. When our students HONOR others and themselves they are showing character. A person once said, "Character is who you are when nobody is watching"...Well, it is also when people are watching so character is evident all the time. This past Thursday the community of Burleson held the annual CHARACTER Luncheon where many of our BISD students were recognized for their character and their essay writing about character. This event was a brief snapshot of character that we experience everyday at BHS and in our community. It is always an amazing event!!! The mayor of Burleson, Ken Shetter, was the keynote speaker at the event and he talked about CHARACTER and the "sense of belonging to something special." We need each other to assist us in building our character and being a part of a positive group. This is not only important in our community, but in our school. Research says that when children are a member of a positive group then they have a better chance for SUCCESS. We have many positive opportunities for students to be an active member. I encourage ALL students to join a club, participate in a sport, perform in the arts, compete with a career and technical education team, or volunteer in the community. This membership builds CHARACTER and provides a sense of belonging to something special. Our BHS goal is that 100% of our students belong and that ALL students learn and exhibit CHARACTER!!!
Thank you for also teaching and enforcing CHARACTER at home!
Go ELKS!!!

Often thought to be the year you can coast, 10th grade year is a pivotal year for many students as they begin to solidify their future plans. This is a great year for students to narrow down their career or college plans, think about courses that will help them for college and start planning out their options. Make sure they are utilizing Career Cruising to help with some of these decisions.
Junior Parents
Often described as the most challenging year in high school, 11th graders need support from all of us. Many are making hard decisions and continuing to work on their classes. Help them out by making sure they are getting good rest, spending time doing things they enjoy, as well as, asking them what they need help with.
All BHS Parents
Remember to take time and eat at least a couple of meals together as a family. Have a spot where all phones/tablets are away from the table so that everyone has a chance to share about their day. Research tells us that a family that can eat at least one meal together will be that much closer as a family. Our weeks can get really busy; slow down and spend time with one another enjoying a great meal.

AVID Staff Spotlight of the Week:
Brooklyn Christian-Shafer is the College Readiness Coordinator here at BHS. She attended college at Tarleton State University obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications with teacher certification and a Master of Education in Educational Administration. In college, Mrs. Christian-Shafer was involved in Intramural Sports, she was a Texan Rep, a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and a member of the Student Government Association. The most memorable part of her college experience is the lifelong friendships made while attending Tarleton State. When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you have applied to your personal and professional life?” she replied, “Communication, organization, leadership, self motivation, and conflict resolution.” When asked, “What advice would you offer to students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” Mrs. Christian-Shafer said, “Go for it! Do not let anything hold you back! Utilize your resources to make your dreams become reality.”
