Reaching New Heights
September 2022
Congaree Families,
We have had a great start to the school year. We are beginning to SOAR. These are the basic rules for our school in all places. We expect our students to be Safe, On task, Always respectful, and Responsible. Our students are getting into learning new standards for their grade levels and using AVID strategies or what is known as high impact learning strategies. Our AVID strategies for the month of September are focused on writing. Students will be using focused note-taking, quick writes, and graphic organizers. They will use these strategies in all of their subjects throughout the month, so please ask them about how they are using them in class. Last month, the students began setting goals, tracking their attendance, and learned about a Growth Mindset.
This month we honor our heroic fallen citizens and first responders that lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and recognize this tragic event that changed the world.
We continue to encourage all families to join the PTO. Your $5.00 will help support many of the programs for families and students at Congaree and we thank all that have expressed an interest in serving on the School Improvement Council. On September 13, 2022 we will have our PTO/Open House from 6:30 until 7:30 pm. We will start and end on time. We are looking forward to seeing you.
Finally, we thank all of you for working to keep our students safe each day. We appreciate your flexibility as we work through challenging times. We ask that you make sure to get students to school on time each day and for them to remain at school the entire day. Please encourage your students to read for 20 minutes each night and talk with them about what they are learning in school. Please follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Dojo, and the school website. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for choosing Congaree Elementary School for your child and let's continue Reaching New Heights together!
Respectfully,
Mr. Dickey

Student Account Statements
Chronically Absent vs. Truant
South Carolina students will be considered “absent” if they miss 50% of their instructional day for ANY reason, regardless of the classification of the absence as excused or unexcused. This means Lexington Two students must be present for at least half of the instructional day to be considered “present” for that school day. School Maximum Absences Allowed: Elementary 10 absences (per year-long class).
Please note that chronic absenteeism is NOT the same as truancy. According to state law, a child is considered truant if they have 3 consecutive unlawful absences or a total of 5 unlawful absences. Once a student becomes truant, the district is required to develop a written intervention plan with the parent/guardian.
Any student who misses school must present a written excuse signed by his/her parent/legal guardian within 3 days of school of the student’s return to school. Parents may use the following button to submit excuses electronically.
Dress Code (Students & Visitors)
Lexington Two Board Policy for student dress code can be found here.
Setting an example:
Adults are role models to children -- all day, every day, in everything we say and do. We take that responsibility very seriously at Congaree Elementary. In that spirit, we ask all of our adult visitors to be mindful of their words, actions, and even the clothing they wear while at the school. Remember, students learn from all of us!
Nurse News
Lex 2 Schools are following SCDHEC School Exclusion Guidelines for Illness:
Please do not send your child to school if they have had fever, over 3 episodes of diarrhea, or over 2 episodes of vomiting in the past 24 hours.
Students who test positive for Covid or who are being monitored for symptoms should stay home until they have had no fever for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medication AND improvement of symptoms AND at least 5 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
Please contact Nurse Ginny if your child has tested positive for Covid or has Covid symptoms.
Visitor Management System
The safety of our Lexington Two students and employees is a top priority. To further strengthen safeguards already in place, we are adding for the 2022-2023 school year a new electronic system at our schools to better manage visitors entering district facilities.
Visitors will be asked to present an ID such as a driver’s license (for those without a US government-issued ID, other forms including state identification cards, concealed handgun licenses, military identification cards, and Green Cards will be accepted). Once entry is approved, visitors will be issued a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit.
ALL visitors will be required to present an ID upon entering any location in the building.

Lexington Two has established a tip line to report threats, crimes, weapons, bullying, and other offenses. Tipsters can remain anonymous or give their information.
