Summit Parent 101
This week RISE teachers should be reaching out to begin scheduling student-led meetings in order to help introduce parents to the Summit Learning Platform. In an effort to get parents informed about Summit Learning, the research behind it and how they can keep track of their student’s progress over the next few weeks we will be giving some helpful links to background information. This week the focus is on Self-Direction.
Summit Learning is built around the idea of helping students become more self-directed while in school to help them prepare for college and the career world. The link above gives a great background on how Self-Directed Learning is built into Summit Learning and the roles of students and teachers.
The 16 Habits of Success - STRESS MANAGEMENT
This week RISE mentors and teachers are continuing to teach students about the 16 Habits of Success. This week marks a transition to focusing on STRESS MANAGEMENT. As deadlines approach for Power Focus Areas and Project Checkpoints students may begin this week to feel the pressure of high school. Now is the time for both teachers and parents to help them learn healthy Stress Management skills that will help them in high school and beyond. True Stress Management means figuring out how to become calm and balanced when situations get stressful by:
Using strategies to calm myself when I'm feeling stressed
Knowing my stress triggers and responses
Recognizing when stress is helpful for me
Taking actions ahead of time to prevent from getting too stressed
As we work to help students learn to manage the stress of school and life in a healthy way, below is a link which can give you some helpful background information to become an ally in helping your child.

Mrs. Lauren Traylor
Mrs. Traylor says, "I love to read, write, and go to concerts. I am also obsessed with movie trivia and fashion." She lives in Frankfort with her husband, Todd Traylor, and their son Ellis. Fun fact: Todd and Lauren met at a Frankfort High Battle of the Bands in 1996. She says, "He swears he can remember the exact spot where we met outside of the auditorium, but I think he's full of bologna
About being back at FHS, she says, "I am very happy to be teaching at my alma mater. Being a Panther to me is about celebrating our differences and constantly challenging expectations. This is a unique place where students feel safe to be themselves, but they are also given the support to continue to grow. It truly is, and always has been, a family."

Mentors help students develop Habits of Success
Each Mentor throughout the day and RISE Time;
- Express Care and show students they matter. Mentors or someone the student can trust, who will listen, believe in the student and encourage them and praise them for their efforts and achievement.
- Challenge Growth and pus students to keep getting better. They will expect students to do their best, stretch and push students to go further, hold them accountable and help the student reflect when they fail so they can learn from it.
- Provide Support and help students complete tasks and goals. Mentors will guide students through hard situations, empower them to build confidence and take charge, advocate for students when needed and set boundaries to help students stay on track.
- Share Power and give their students a say. Mentors respect students and take them seriously, include them in decisions, work with students to solve problems and create opportunities for students to take action and lead.
- Expand Possibilities and connect students to people and places that broaden their world. Mentors work to inspire students to see possibilities, broaden their horizons exposing students to new ideas, experiences, and places and introduces students to people who can help them grow.
Students meet daily in their RISE time with their RISE Mentor. Regularly they have check-ins with their Mentor to check on goals, progress, and reflection. This is a highly important part of each students' daily schedule.
Parents - Talk to your Students about the Dangers of E-cigs
E-cigarettes are designed and formulated to enable users to take in large amounts of nicotine, heavy metals and toxins,
"It really makes me mad that companies are getting rich off of hurting kids with these flavors." Dallas, Jefferson County.
"If my friends said, 'Everybody's doing it,' I'd be, like, they're doing it because they're addicted to it. They can't stop." Desiree, Fayette County.
"A lot of people don't know that one little pod of this e-cigarette is equal to a whole pack of cigarettes." Hayley, Grant County.
"Over and over, we hear that teens - and sometimes even their parents - just don't understand the significant health risks of kids using these highly addictive tobacco products," said Ben Chandler, president and CEO of the Foundation. "We're doing all we can to help pass laws that restrict youth access, but we know that most kids are going to be making the final decision themselves. When someone leans over and urges them to buy an e-cig, we want to make sure they have a clear, factual understanding of all the reasons to avoid becoming a pawn of the tobacco industry."
E-cigarettes are designed and formulated to enable users to take in large amounts of nicotine, heavy metals and toxins, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Using nicotine during adolescence can harm brain development, and reduce attention span and impulse control. Nicotine use also can prime the brain for future addictions to other drugs, the CDC says.
"We regularly hear stories of kids using several e-cig juice pods a day, which means they inhale multiple packs of cigarettes worth of nicotine," Chandler said. "No wonder the FDA is investigating incidences of seizures associated with youth e-cig use."
The Foundation initially launched its "I Just Didn't Know"campaign in April with four PSAs, a website and social media accounts. Those PSAs are airing on television stations throughout Kentucky, as well as in movie theaters and schools, and at public health events. All campaign materials are being made available free to these and other organizations to help spread the word about the dangers of youth e-cigarette use.
The new TV PSAs are found here.
The 60-second and 3-second radio PSAs are found here.
All the PSAs are found at www.ijustdidntknow.org. Broadcast quality copies of the PSAs are available by contacting Alexa Kerley at 877-326-2583, akerley@healthy-ky.org.
