Reading Week 7
10/3-10/7
This Week
This week in ELA, we will be wrapping up literary nonfiction. Though we are moving on, we will be reviewing and reflecting on this genre throughout the year, while comparing and contrasting it to various other genres that we read as well. Next on the agenda is fiction and everything that goes with it: plot, mood, tone, characterization, point of view, imagery, figurative language, summary, and theme. We will also be incorporating a few mini projects to help us take on and really understand figurative language. Once again, we have so much to do and so little time, but I am so excited for the month of October and all the spooky stories we will soon be reading.
Call of Duty
To conclude literary nonfiction, we will read the compelling story of Marine Corporal Jose Armenta and his loyal dog, Zenit.
Spelling
Don't forget about the spelling test on Friday over Unit 7. Study at http://www.spellingcity.com/sarahboyd107/.
Long Shot
If you have a chance, ask your student about Long Shot by Chris Paul. Students discussed how it informs and entertains the reader, all while teaching a lesson of perseverance and determination.
NEW I.R. GOALS
New I.R. Goals were handed out on Friday. The parent letter went home Monday (10/03). Students may return the goal sheet signed for 5 extra points on this week's spelling test. Starting this Tuesday, Mrs. Boyd will be checking and documenting page numbers every week. Students are expected to read 100 pages from Tuesday to Tuesday. If students do not reach 100 pages per week, they must spend recess time on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Mrs. Boyd's room to catch up.
TRUTH
Parents,
Let me just say that you have some awesome kids. As a whole, they are incredibly polite and thoughtful. Their good deeds do not go unnoticed; I see them being extremely sweet to each another and to their teachers every single day. Personally, I have been blessed these last few weeks by their sincerity and kind demeanors. We are having an absolute blast in Mrs. Boyd's room, and I couldn't be more thankful to be apart.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Boyd
