Mrs. Franke's 5th Grade Class
The students have started their first book club in 5th grade. Each time the students meet in their book clubs, they need to have: 6-8 think marks, a thick question, and a write long complete. The students have 3 more meetings in their book clubs, check in with your child to see how their work is coming along. :0) We will continue to work on our deeper level thinking skills through our book clubs: inferring, connecting, synthesizing, predicting, analyzing, and critiquing while we read our book club and "just right" books.
The students will be digging deep into figurative language. We will be learning about, reading and using: similes, metaphors, puns, idioms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, hyperboles, allusions, and more in our writing! For the next couple weeks before Winter Break, the students will be completing another opinion essay.
The students are learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, once they have a good grasp on adding and subtracting, we will multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. Don't forget to ask your child how their math goals are coming and check out their PLP for unit 4.
We are sailing off to the New World! The students are participating in a simulation where they are colonists. Many of our ships have landed in the New World and we are now learning about the hardships of colonizing. The students will be writing journals in the voice of a colonist about our activities. Below, you can see photos of some of our colonies.
The 5th grade winter concert will be held in the CPAC on Thursday, December 15th at 6:30. That same day, in the afternoon, we will be going to the CPAC to practice for the big show! The 5th graders and Mallet, Drum, and Chorus Clubs will be performing at Parkview on Friday, December 16th at 9:15.
