Writing
The last few students will be finishing up their narrative editing and all students will be working on a Thanksgiving-themed persuasive writing piece called "Please Don't Eat Me!" Students have to take the perspective of a turkey and persuade the farmer not to pick them for Thanksgiving dinner!
Reading
This week, we will be reading chapters 3-6 in The Hundred Dresses while we focus on using QAR and Lucy Calkins strategies while responding to comprehension questions. Next week, we will finish the book by reading chapter 7.
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: We will continue working on unit 6 this week. 6C & 6D will be due Thursday. The unit 6 test will be on Friday, 11/18.
Words Their Way: We will continue splitting into our small groups for spelling this week. Tic-Tac-Toe activities will be due on Friday, which will also be their quiz day.
There will be no Wordly Wise or Words Their Way next week.
Math
We will be working on fractions all week! Monday, we will be talking about fractions circles and equivalence. Tomorrow, we will practice placing fractions on a number line and equivalence. Friday, we will do more practice with equivalent fractions. Next week, we will solve a Thanksgiving Mystery by doing a mixed review of skills (subtraction, fractions, multiplication, & elapsed time) and will play some fraction games.
Science
Last week, students were given time in class to begin the ISTEP+ review for chapter 1 in science. That review will be due on Tuesday. We will go over it in class in preparation for Thursday's unit 1 science test. The best way to study is to go through the ISTEP+ review as the test will have similar, application-style questions. They will also need to be able to answer these short answer questions:
- You want to keep track of how much your puppy weighs over the next four weeks. What is one measurement tool you can use and explain how you would use it.
- Given a set of data (temperatures), write an observation and prediction.
- A student decides to test how much faster a plant may grow if it gets plant food. She gives one plant 15 drops of plant food and 10 mL of water. She gives another plant 20 mL of water and no plant food. How can you change this to make it a fair test?
