Welcome to Kindergarten!
This week, we will be jumping right into our normal routines. We will start our Fundations program, learning (or reviewing) letter names/sounds and how to write them. Instruction in Phonics supports students' reading development. Support your child's phonemic development at home by asking your child what sound starts a word i.e "Don't step on the ssssnake!! What sound is at the beginning of the word snake?".
In Language Arts we will be starting our journey as readers together. Some of the books we will be reading as a class include: "The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School"; "The Carrot Seed"; and"Mrs. WIshy-Washy". Your children will spend time privately, and then with a partner exploring non-fiction books each day. Reading is our passion, and we can't wait to build a new generation of readers! You could start reading signs with your children as you drive/walk to school/around town. It takes no extra time or money to support your child's growth, and it's fun!
We will also be writing a class book together, that will be available for reading in our library by the end of the week. Published writers already! It was amazing watching the kids make so much progress in writing their names in just one day! They're so proud of themselves!
In Math, we will be exploring math materials, such as pattern blocks and attribute blocks. We will be spending a lot of time playing counting games, and learning how to write numbers over the coming weeks.
In Social Studies we are beginning our Leader In Me sessions. The children will be getting to know about their classmates, and sharing what makes them special. They will be working on projects together as a team, and will be learning about the 7 Habits (and indeed, what habits are!!) Tell your child this weekend what you think makes them special. Our overall point is that each person brings special qualities to the class, which makes a strong team that achieves wonderful things!
