Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,

I hope everyone is well and staying safe. We have 362 students and all of our teachers that have returned to In-Person instruction as of April 8th. Students were excited and happy to be able to return and it has been great feeling the student energy here on campus once again. I have particularly enjoyed seeing students in classrooms and supervising them playing outside in their "zones" at Recess time. Our teachers are working hard to meet the needs of all families with both In-Person and Distance Learning students. Teaching both groups simultaneously continues to be a challenge particularly in the younger grade levels and we appreciate your patience and support.

The Drop Off and Pick Up procedures for In-Person students has gone relatively smoothly with the staggered start and end times. I want to thank our Yard Duty Staff for their focus and mindfulness around student safety. Similarly, our Recess and Lunch breaks in the specified "Zones" has gone well and a Shout Out to the REACH program staff that is helping out during that time. The Cafeteria Staff is also going above and beyond by preparing Snack boxes by teacher for Recess time. The Office Staff has been working diligently communicating with parents regarding contracts, schedules, permission for COVID-19 testing, and getting out the Daily Wellness Check forms. 4th and 5th grade In-Person learning students will be tested for COVID-19 tomorrow(Tuesday, April 20th) with our school nurses here on campus. TK-3rd grade in-Person students need to come with a parent for COVID-19 testing this Wednesday, April 21st between 9:00-3:00pm through the Front Parking Lot. A reminder to all families that have students who have returned In-Person that we do expect students to follow our Dress Code.

As most of you are already aware, San Mateo County recently moved into the less restrictive Orange Tier of COVID-19 cases. The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) recently updated its Pandemic Recovery Framework for Schools. The updated document includes public health guidance around physical distancing, travel, individuals identified as close contacts, and graduations. This change from 6 feet to 3 feet means that we can accept more than 15 students at a time in classrooms(approximately 22 students per class at a time). If any family is interested in having their child return In-Person please contact our office.

Attendance Update:

Students attending In- Person learning need to be at school during their scheduled time. If the student does not attend school, then the student is marked absent unless the absence is excused.

Excused absence reasons are determined by California Department of Education to be:

  • Pupil’s Illness

  • Quarantine (under the direction of a county or city health officer)

  • Medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic appointments for the pupil.

  • Attending the funeral services of a member of his or her immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside California.

  • For justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference, or attendance at an educational conference on the legislative or judicial process offered by a nonprofit organization when the pupil's absence is requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative

  • Spending time with a member of the pupil's immediate family, who is an active duty member. The amount of absence must be determined at the discretion of the superintendent.

  • Attendance at religious retreats shall not exceed four hours per semester.

  • Ed Code section 46014 allows for the student to have an “excused absence” for a religious holiday, with written consent of the student’s parents. However, several conditions have to be met.

Students attending Distance Learning need to be connected on time for class. When the teacher takes attendance in the morning the student should be present unless the student's parent/guardian has called the office due to illness or has a Doctor's/Dentist appointment (see above excused absences reason determined by California Department of Education) Otherwise, the student will be marked late, tardy or unexcused.

2020-21 Panorama Climate Survey: 3rd-8th Grade Students & Families

We're excited to launch our Panorama Climate Survey on Monday! The climate survey window for students, families and staff is Monday, April 19th - April 30th.

  • Students will access the survey by navigating to and entering their 6-digit student ID number which serves as their access code

  • Families will receive 3 emails from Health & Wellness (April 19, 26 and 30) with a link to the survey in either English or Spanish. They will access their survey at (link included in their emails) and select their school from a drop down menu.

As you know, assessing the school climate provides useful information that allows us to develop our social emotional support programs with input from our students, staff and community. This year we’ve also added questions related to equity and inclusion to emphasize our ongoing commitment to the important work we’ve done in this area.
