A Note and a Resource from Andrea
Here are a few of my "collection" of calm breathing and mindfulness videos/activities I mentioned yesterday. They, of course, are embraced best by the students that I have had doing it since Kindergarten, bc they know it as part of the routine. Starting fresh with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders can take a few weeks bc some kids may be self-conscious and there are often at least one of two that are uncomfortable with the quiet at first and breath loudly to create attention... A few things help with that. 1) reminding them of the immediate and longer term benefits 2) clarifying that this is part of being responsible, respectful, prepared and even safe (and you can explain how each of these fits- following directions, allowing yourself and those around you to benefit from the activity, etc) and 3) you can let them know that if it is "tricky" (intentionally or unintentionally) to do at first, you are happy to give them individualized practice time at lunch/after class (I did this with a few kids the first year or two... and it not only helped them be successful with breathing calmly with the group afterwards, but it gave us some of that extra getting to know you/bonding time that is so beneficial, too. Again, it may take some time (especially with older grades) for it to feel good to everyone... but you may find it to be worth it. :)
