Financial Literacy
What's a Fifth Grader to Know about Personal Financial Literacy
The student applies mathematical process standards to manage one’s financial resources effectively for lifetime financial security. The student is expected to:
- define income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, and property tax;
- explain the difference between gross income and net income;
- identify the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of payment, including check, credit card, debit card, and electronic payments;
- develop a system for keeping and using financial records;
- describe actions that might be taken to balance a budget when expenses exceed income; and
- balance a simple budget.
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Find a career that interests you. Learn about your chosen career. Determine average money salary. Write a summary of the career, education needed, salary, job qualifications, growth potential of career, and brief job description based on your research. Submit this prior to beginning your budget work.
Hands on Banking for Kids
Work through the modules posted. Write a reflection of your learning for each section and turn it in along with your certificate of completion prior to choosing your group. This information will help you be successful with your group!
Hands on Banking for Teens
This is completely optional. You may choose to work on this but it is not necessary! This is geared towards middle school kids.
Geometry Activities
Numbers and Operations Practice Activities
You will 'play' these activities on a computer. Stay focused and turn in a reflection including your name, date, activity played and what you practiced and learned.
Algebraic Thinking
You will practice and reinforce algebraic thinking with these activities. Once again, please turn in a reflection as posted above.
Decimals, Fractions and Percents
Before you watch the video… Brainstorm some real world examples of decimals, fractions and percents! Try to list at about five examples of each before you begin.
