Playing 4 Guitars at Once
Playing 4 Guitars at Once
If you passed by Ian Burton on the street you may not have noticed him. An average height and build he can usually be found wearing a t-shirt and jeans. He is approachable and friendly; someone you may ask for directions on the street or to see if he has a lighter. But even with striking blue eyes and blonde hair you can’t find in a bottle he appears to be another average Joe; however nothing could be further from the truth. A natural born entrepreneur, Cary native, Ian Burton started his own music school where he teaches guitar, bass, drums, and music theory. The school which has been open since 2007 includes two locations and employs several other music instructors. Burton School of the Arts is an impressive accomplishment on its own but Ian Burton also teaches Latin dance and martial arts, mediation, and healthy living at Kamiza. Ian Burton also is working on an Operetta with longtime friend and fellow band member S.P. Sully. But wait there is more! The talented Mr. Burton also writes, composes, and mixes his own music as well as sings and plays four guitars at once. You just read that last sentence twice didn’t you? Yes, Ian Burton, whose stage name is E N Burton can play two guitars with his hands, two bass guitars with his feet- that’s four different melodies and all while he sings! I’m sure you never thought anyone could play four instruments at once let alone someone as personable, humble, and normal looking as Ian Burton, but it’s true he can. He was even featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! syndicated cartoon in February 2013. Now it’s not hard to image the person who could do such a feat (pun intended) as being a lost rebel who smokes too much, talks too loud, and has too many tattoos. However if you judged this book (or should I say album) by its cover you would be greatly mistaken. And his band, The E N Burton Group, has even more to offer than just its lead singer and guitarist’s incredible talent. The band currently includes S.P. Sully who adds his own musical flair on guitar, vocals, and other various uncommon instruments and Allen Schwenk keeps the beat on an electronic drum set that pumps out an array of thrilling sounds. The music is exceptional- catchy pop rock tunes somewhat reminiscent of The Doors. With smart and often sexy lyrics the sound of the E N Burton Group is addictive. But great music is only part of the equation: what makes Ian Burton more than just your average Joe and what makes the E N Burton Group stand out from all other bands out there, is not just musical genius, but also his unique and truly exceptional skill at playing four guitars at once. If you were to close your eyes and hear his music you’d never guess it was one man playing all those guitars- it’s truly an amazing sight to watch. Ian Burton is no stranger to musical performance and the E N Burton group is not the first band he has been a part of. He has been in a slew of bands with a variety of music genres as drummer, bassist, vocals and/or guitarist. His music career started back in 1999 and he can list a total of eleven bands on his musician’s resume which include the hard rock band Unstable Element, classic rock band The Music Company, and Uknighted whose sound combined numerous styles of music. It was not until 2010 that Ian Burton began teaching himself how to play four guitars at once and has since mastered this extraordinary and unique self-taught skill. In 2011 he released the album Glimpse which features Uknighted and for the first time his four instrument playing. The E N Burton Group is a remarkable band with new and exciting ideas about how music should be experienced as well as heard. Their show is a must see and hear performance that will blow you away and leave you wanting more. This is truly an astonishing story of very talented man, group, and show, and is defiantly not one you want to pass by!
