Please make your suggestions.

Right now, we have three ideas:

  • LinkedIn - how it works, will it work for you?

  • Cyber Security - what you need to know to protect yourself and your business?

  • Environmental Navigation - what property owners, some leasers and individuals looking to invest in commercial properties need to know.

Are you interested in any of these topics? If so, let us know and when we have enough interest, we'll get you together, email: info@fbavancouverisland.ca

FBA Members Practicing Work/Life Balance

Work/Life fit is such an important concept for the family business owner. Kathy and Murray Tough, Serenity Home Care, are taking care of this with an epic trip that starts on May 12th.

This trip was started by Murray’s desire to celebrate his 50 years in Canada, as he immigrated here in Feb 1969 (to Alberta in the middle of winter!).

Murray decided he wanted to cycle across Canada but did not want to rough it so he and Kathy bought an RV and while Murray cycles his way across the country , Kathy plans to check out as many golf courses as she can.

You can follow their progress on their website www.toughlife.ca

Have a great trip!

Family Business Advisory (FBA) Team Retreat

by Jennifer Wilson, Canada Homestay Network

Every year, our FBA Team escapes to a secluded location for a weekend of team building, learning, and fun. This year, we stayed at the charmingly rustic Soule Creek Lodge in Port Renfrew. We all arrived in time for dinner at the pub, followed by an evening of music at the Lodge.

Our original plan involved a day of fishing on Saturday. The forecast called for high winds, which swiftly divided our normally steadfast group into two camps: the I’ll-brave-anything-for-a-story folks, and the I’d-rather-not-overdose-on-Gravol types. To our relief, the guides cancelled the trip on Saturday morning.

As resourceful as ever, we came up with a Plan B. We had a beautiful hike to Botanical beach, a beach fire (thanks, Andy!), and enjoyed all the joys of spring on the coast: rain, wind, sun, and hail. We spent a restful afternoon napping and hot tubbing, and topped off the day with a spontaneous facilitated session on the Kolbe assessment by our very own trained facilitator, Jennifer Wilson. Kolbe is a validated instrument that measure one’s striving instincts, and helps people understand how they naturally approach problem solving. We each took the assessment and then discussed our results individually and how we function as a group. Everyone came away with new insights about themselves and each other! To learn more, visit http://www.kolbe.com

We all agreed that we couldn’t have planned a better weekend, and it just goes to show that sometimes the best outcomes arise from the unexpected!

Join a Family Business Advisory (FBA) Team

The teams serve as your own mini board of directors, supporting you in your challenges and opportunities as a family business. Members leverage the perspectives of other family businesses, industries and generations.

We encourage all family business member to join an FBA Team. This is their unique opportunity to learn from each other, to work on their family business is a special way and to have the security of confidential discussions in a trusting and inviting environment. Many members of family businesses feel alone and these groups end the isolation because those in the group understand that operating a family business brings its unique challenges.

The experiences from those who have been there on topics like working with the family, managing the business and succession are among the areas discussed.
