14th Amendment
July 9, 1868, the 14th Amendment was ratified. This granted citizenship to all people, even recently freed slaves. They can't deny anyone and the jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. They made it because there were issues with former slaves in the American civil war. The citizens overruled the supreme courts with the Dred Scott case.
Thaddeus Stevens
He was a member of the House of representatives, he was a leader of the Radical Republican during Abraham Lincolns presidency. He fought to abolish slavery and help draft the 14th amendment during reconstruction.
Andrew Johnson
He was the 17th president of the united states, Andrew johnson became president when lincoln was assassinated he was vice president before he became president. He was the first president to be impeached, but he was not removed from the office. He grew up poor and he lacked good education. He was governor of Tennessee he was the only southern senator to remain loyal to the union and the people. Johnson wanted to restore the union.
Ulysses Grant
Ulysses Grant was commander of the union army, during the American war. He became a national hero, and he was nominated for president in 1868. He was attempting to keep the civil rights and freed black slaves protected.
Freedmen's bureau
it was established in 1865, to help black slaves and poor whites in the south. Over 4 million slaves gained their freedom as a result of the union. The freedmen's bureau helped out with food housing and medical help, it established a bunch of schools and teachers. The bureau was prevented from fully carrying out its program due to not having a lot of funds.
