Annotated Bibliography
Overview
You will create an annotated bibliography on a topic of your choice using five sources. You must use at least one print source and one subscription database source.
Pick a Topic
- Choose a topic to do your annotated bibliography on
- Come up with the question you would be trying to answer if you were researching this topic
Sources
- Find five sources that would help you to answer this question if you were really researching this topic
- You must use at least one print source and one subscription database source
Citation
- Cite your sources. It is recommended you use EasyBib. If you do not want to use EasyBib consult the MLA Common Citation Formats document.
- Make sure you cite your sources fully. They should not be missing any pieces of information. REMEMBER: EASYBIB DOES NOT ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY FIND ALL THE INFORMATION.
- Make sure your annotated bibliography is in the correct format. Consult the MLA Example Bibliography document.
- YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY SHOULD BE ARRANGED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER
Annotations
What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations of a variety of sources (books, articles, videos, websites, etc.) that also has a short paragraph describing and evaluating each particular source. This paragraph is called an annotation.
What's the point?
The purpose of the annotation is for you to think critically about the source: what sort of information it covers, in what way it covers that information, and whether it was helpful to you
What goes in the annotation?
The annotation should be 3-6 sentences long, and should briefly cover CONTENT, INTENDED AUDIENCE, SCOPE, and UNIQUE FEATURES. For each citation make sure you answer the following questions:
- What is this source about?
- How will this source help to answer your question?
- Who is this source for (people familiar with the topic, people unfamiliar with the topic, young children, scholars...)?
- Does this source have any special features (illustrations, bibliography, maps...)?
- Do you think this source is reliable? Why or why not?
How To Do It
Cite the source as usual, then move to a new line, indent, and write your citation. There is a space for an annotation right in Easybib!
Example
"Cyberbullying." Stopbullying.gov. U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2015. Web. 04 June 2015. <http://www.stopbullying.gov/cyberbullying/prevention/index.html.> Stopbullying.gov provides several pages on cyberbullying. It covers what cyberbullying is, prevention, and reporting. Although it seems to be written with parents in mind, the information is simple and easy to understand. The website is from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and besides giving the basic information, it also has some statistics and a short video on standing up to cyberbully. The source is helpful in answering my question because it provided some good foundation information for understanding how cyberbullying is different from regular bullying.
