Healthy New Year's Resolutions for Families
Instead of creating individual New Year's resolutions, how about creating New Year's resolutions for the whole family. The benefits will last well into the teen years and beyond. By being proactive, parents can help prevent youth risk behaviors.
- Creating strong bonds through relationship-building
- Establishing and consistently reinforcing healthy standards/boundaries
- Giving youth opportunities to build skills and gain recognition
The following ideas for family New Year's resolutions can promote protective factors among youth.
See which resolutions might best fit your family in 2020:
- Unplug: establish regular times each week or month when the family unplugs and connects without technology.
- Establish a healthy meal plan and involve youth in the meal planning and prep--as age allows.
- Create fun family fitness opportunities regularly to get more exercise.
- Read: Read together and/or make a reading list challenge with your youth. Get help from your local library.
- Share household responsibilities: make a chore chart and stick to it.
- Volunteer: Practice acts of kindness and learn the art of giving back.
- Get enough sleep and help youth learn to wind down for healthy sleep habits.
- Create and stick to a family budget and teach youth about managing money.
- Live green: practice care of the earth by finding ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
- Make sure parents take time for self-care to benefit the whole family.
