The Springville Saga
Springville K-8 Parent Newsletter (5/24/17)
Principal's Message
As we enter into the final weeks of our school year, it's a time to reflect on and celebrate our learning. As an EL School, an important culminating event for students and staff is our Exhibition Night which is this Thursday night at Springville starting at 6pm. You have likely received an invitation from your student(s) for this event
Exhibition Night is a celebration of learning for students and staff as well as an opportunity for students to present their learning to an authentic audience. In order to prepare for this event, students are supported in the classroom to do multiple drafts that result in high quality products or performances. As an example, over the last few weeks, I have watched kindergarteners go through multiple drafts of drawing insects and 3rd graders prepare their own bridges; it's amazing to see the passion and excitement they bring to their work.
When you attend Exhibition Night, your students will share their learning process that includes not only what they learned but how they learned it. They will likely present the guiding questions and learning targets they addressed as well as how they achieved high quality work in their final products. This is their chance to shine, and we hope you enjoy this special evening with your students!
A second special event happening Thursday evening at the same time as Exhibition Night is the PTO Auction set to begin at 5:30pm . Thanks to our generous community, there are some incredible items and packages to bid on that look very tempting! Our PTO Auction Committee has worked very hard on this event, and we so appreciate all of their work to support our school.
As you can see, Thursday night is going to be a very full night of celebration and most importantly, community. We hope you can join us!!

Reminders & Updates
- Parent Input Forms: Parent input forms are now available in the Springville office and have been emailed to all parents. The input form is an opportunity to provide us information as we work to build balanced classrooms for the 2017-18 school year. All input forms must be returned to the Springville office by Friday, June 2.
- Drop Off Safety: A reminder that parents who are dropping off students in the morning must stop along the curb, pulling all the way forward, and letting students out of the car on the curb side. We have had some cars stopping and letting students out into the middle of the parking lot where cars are moving. For student safety, please only drop off on along the curb.
- Author Visit: On May 31, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders will attend a presentation from author filmmakers and performers Rob and Laura Sams of Sisbro Studios. Last year, two of our 3rd grade classes worked with SisBro in filming portions of the PBS kids show "Splash and Bubbles" which earned our school a free author visit. There will be videos available for students to purchase and have autographed.
- Kindergarten Registration: Enrollment packets for incoming 2017-18 Kindergarten students are available in our main office. If you have not already done so, please complete an enrollment packet for your incoming kindergarten student. This helps a great deal with planning for classes next year.
Staffing at Springville for 2017-2018 School Year
It's important to understand that we follow guidelines for staff transfers based on contractual agreements. Transfer guidelines are not based on seniority, rather transfers are based on filling needs at schools across our district. When a school is overstaffed like Springville, open positions are identified at other schools and matches are made based on the needs of the other schools and the skills and training of our staff members. This is a difficult process because we value every teacher and staff member, but the process does guarantee that every staff member will have a teaching position next year.
We are saying good-bye to some outstanding teachers and staff at Springville. We are going through this reduction process only because we are overstaffed, and we are sad to lose all of these staff members. We ask for your help in honoring their work and contributions at Springville as we finish our school year.
Choir Celebrations!!
Springville's 6th grade choir (lead by Katie Regan and Matt Carlson) performed at the district Middle School Choir Festival on Friday, April 28 at Sunset Presbyterian Church. Springville's performance of "Jambo" can be seen in the video below starting at 4:45. Additionally, they joined other BSD choir students for two mass numbers at the end. Congratulations to our 6th grade choir for an outstanding performance!
Our 4th and 5th grade choir (lead by Andrea Herinckx) has performed several times this spring including our Volunteer Appreciation Event and at our All School Gatherings. Most recently, they presented their spring choir performance for parents and community. Please use the link below to see their concert on May 11th at Springville.
