Principal's Corner

Students and families, thank you for taking the time to attend conferences and meet with your teachers and student’s teachers. Open lines of communication are an essential component to a student’s learning and success. When parents, students, and teachers work together, great things can happen. As a building, we had 73% of our parents/students attend conferences or decline to have a conference at this time. The high turnout rate is a tribute to the parents being invested in their student’s academic success. Conferences can be a great time to connect with your student’s teachers; however, please know that conferences do not have to be the only time to connect with staff. Parents are always welcome to come in, email, and/or call. We invite you to be part of what is going on at Edison and with your student’s education.

A special thank you to Edison PTO and all the volunteers that provided the meals for our staff both days of conferences. We are very appreciative of the continued support that the PTO gives the Edison community and our staff.

High school registration and informational meetings are just around the corner. The New Tech Program at Jefferson High School has already started to accept applications for enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year. We will have other high school registration and transition events throughout the month of December/January to ensure that all our 8th graders have a smooth transition from Edison to their respective high schools.

In addition to the various high school registration events coming up, we will have several middle school events to help our current 5th grade students and families as they begin to think about the transition to Edison for next fall. All 5th grade parents and students from the Edison attendance area will have transition meetings (Surviving Middle School) planned for them on April 12th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The Edison Spanish Immersion meeting for Spanish Immersion 5th grade students and their parents will be on Monday, November 23rd at 6:30 pm via a Zoom meeting. We will be sending a link to our incoming Spanish Immersion families when we get closer to November 23rd.

With the beginning of the 2nd quarter and a rising number of cases of COVID-19 in our community, it is time to renew our commitment to health and safety for everyone! We are committed to keeping our students, staff, and Edison Community healthy and safe to keep all of us in school.

· NOW is a good time to remind our students of the importance of wearing a mask and wearing it appropriately/properly.

· NOW is a good time to make sure you are reviewing the daily symptom screening questions before sending your student to school.

· NOW is a good time to make sure students are washing hands often, scrubbing vigorously for 20 seconds with soap and water.

· NOW is a good time to encourage our students to use hand sanitizers often and to avoid making contact with their face.

As the seasonal weather and colder temperatures arrive, please help us remind students to dress appropriately for the season. It never ceases to amaze me, as I welcome students into school each morning, how many of them run up the steps with no coat, and in some instances, in shorts and flip-flops. Students who arrive early and stay late need to be as prepared as those students who are walking home. We worry about those students being outside on our coming winter days/nights. Please enroll your students in the YMCA Y-Club Navigators if you are not able to pick them up after school in a timely manner (by 4:15 PM). Students who walk or are dropped off before school are encouraged to arrive after 8:30 AM unless they are participating in an activity. Students are not allowed in the building prior to 8:40 AM unless there is inclement weather or for those arriving to eat breakfast. Breakfast starts at 8:30 AM, and students who will be eating breakfast can enter at 8:30 AM. Reminder, that doors open for all students to enter the building at 8:40 AM.

From my family and the Edison Family, we are wishing the best for your family this season!

Edison Student Council

The goals of Edison’s Student Council are to build school spirit and pride, to assume responsibility as citizens in our school and community, and to promote a safe, caring environment.

Congratulations to everyone who was selected to represent their PRO-times as members of Edison’s Student Council. Student Council members will work hard on a variety of projects in order to help Edison meet our goals.

Coats for Kids

The weather is getting cold, so we are going to help our neighbors by collecting gently used winter coats, snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, and mittens. Items should be turned in by Monday, November 9. Please turn in to room 144. The PRO who collects the most will receive ice cream during PRO. Please mark bags of items with your PRO teacher’s name. We will use a point system to determine the winner. Coats will be worth 5 points, boots and snow pants 3 points, and hats, gloves, and scarves will be worth 1 point.

Heartland House Christmas – We have committed to providing the kids at the Heartland House with Christmas presents. There are 240 children on the list this year. Each child will receive an age appropriate $20-25 toy and a tied fleece blanket. We would like to invite Edison families and friends to get involved. If you would like to purchase gifts for these children or would like to donate fleece or make fleece blankets, please let Mrs. Sherard or Mrs. Carlson know.

Santa Letters for Make A Wish- Make A Wish is an agency that grants wishes to seriously ill children. Each year Macy’s donates $1-2 for each letter written to Santa to Make A Wish. Schools across the state participate in a contest to see which school can write the most letters. Edison has won the contest for the last 3 years. We wrote over 10,000 letters last year. Let’s top it this year! So, start writing letters. Letters should be written on 1/2 or 1/4 sheet of printer or notebook paper.

Pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald house. Please collect pop tabs and deliver them to room 144. These pop tabs are recycled and help support the Ronald McDonald house which provides a temporary home for families who have seriously ill children.

Our next meeting date is November 10 at 8:15

Great Opportunities: The Edison PTO is looking to fill several board positions for the 2021-22 school year. With the honors program moving to Patrick Henry MS next year, several of our current board members will be leaving. We will have openings for Secretary, Bookfair, and Co-President. If you would like to get more involved with the school, would like to meet interesting people, and want to make a difference, please think about taking one of these roles. It’s not as much work as you think it is...and it's wonderfully rewarding! Contact us at edisonsiouxfalls@gmail.com to learn more!

Thank you!!!!

November is a month to reflect on what we are thankful for. The PTO wants to

personally thank all who helped provide food and donations for parent/teacher conferences. The response from our families for the meals was phenomenal and greatly appreciated by staff. And speaking of staff, we want to send out a HUGE thank you to our Edison staff for all the hard work they are doing during this unusual and challenging school year.

Fundraising

Normally in November, PTO holds one of our major fundraising efforts, catalog sales. Given the situation with Covid-19, we will not be doing the catalog sales fundraiser this year. However, we are planning to offer another spiritwear sale in the near future. Spirit wear can make great holiday gifts, so our goal would be to close out the sale early enough to get the items delivered before the December holiday break. Please watch for more details in an upcoming email.

Make a donation

As a PTO, we function solely from donations and fundraising as we have no membership dues. This year may bring more demand for PTO funds with little ability to fundraise. Funds raised will help enrich our student’s learning experiences, including continued library updates, as well as counselor, student, and classroom needs. If you would like to send money to support the PTO, you can send cash in an envelope marked “PTO” or send a check made out to “Edison PTO” and leave it with the office staff. You can also make a donation using PayPal or with a Credit/Debit card by clicking the link below.

Team 6-4 Fundraiser

Team 6-4 is at it again! Edison Middle School students and staff are standing together in the fight against breast cancer. October 26-30, Team 6-4 hosted a “Pink Week.” Team 6-4 students donated pink treats that we were able to sell to our Edison students and staff members. All profits from this fundraiser will be donated to the Avera and Sanford Breast Cancer Centers. Finally, Friday, October 30th, was “Wear Pink Day” to show our solidarity! We want to continue to show that Edison Middle School can do anything when we work together! #TogetherIsBetter!

Library Info

YARP @your EMS Library

Since 1989, each year the Young Adult Reading Program (YARP) Teen Reads Committee of the South Dakota Library Association publishes a list of books to promote quality literature and to help South Dakota teachers and librarians in selecting and promoting books for adolescents. Students read books from the list and give it a star rating of 1 to 5, 5 being best. One winner is selected from the Middle School list and another winner from the High School list. Please encourage your child to read any of the books listed below.

Athletic Information

Edison Athletics 2020-2021

We have survived the Fall Athletic Season in part because our Coaches and Participants have followed Covid-19 Guidelines. Awesome job everyone.

Heading into the Winter Athletic Season, we are looking forward to the 7th & 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Season beginning on November 9th. If you were involved in either Cross Country or Volleyball, you have your required paperwork completed. If you were not involved in either of those Athletic Seasons and you are planning on participating in Girls’ Basketball; please make sure you have the following completed:

  1. Activity Participation Packet – done online when updating your student’s information for the 2020-2021 school year. If not completed at that time, you can find the forms on the Edison Athletic Website.
  2. Preparticipation Physical Evaluation – this is a two-page form that you take to your Dr. for completion. The second page is a medical history page that is filled out by the parent/guardian. This form, also, can be found on the Edison Athletic Website.

Just a reminder, the Boys’ Basketball Season does not begin until January 19th - the week after the Girls’ season has completed.

Please continue to practice appropriate protocols as we look forward to continuing our year of middle school athletics without any issues.

If you would have any questions, please contact me at:

School Related Cancellations and Postponements

It is important to be prepared for the winter storms and extreme cold that every South Dakota winter brings. Please read the following information so you are aware of the procedures for school related cancellations and postponements.

District leaders rely on experts from the National Weather Service and city/county officials when we make decisions on school cancellations, late starts or early dismissals.

Cancelling School/Late Start

When a severe storm hits the area, or is forecast, we start contacting local officials as early as 3:00 a.m. We communicate with our Operational Services Department, the Weather Bureau, the City Street Department, Sioux Falls Transit, and our transportation contractors. It is our goal to decide whether or not to cancel school by 5 a.m. to allow time for parking lots and sidewalks to be cleared, food services to prepare meals and the bus company to begin operations. In the event that school needs to be cancelled or delayed, families will be alerted via a ParentLink phone call. These calls will generally be sent between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to accommodate families whose children are picked up by buses at 6:45 a.m.

Announcements are also made on the District’s website, Sioux Falls School District social media sites (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SiouxFallsSchoolDistrict/ and Twitter: twitter.com/SFSchools ) the SFSD app, and over the local radio and television stations.

Because the public schools have a limited rural area, it is often possible for Sioux Falls to have school when nearby towns may not.

Early Dismissal

Storms occasionally move in during the day, making it necessary to assess whether or not to dismiss school early. We choose early dismissal only under the most extreme circumstances. In most cases, it is safer for students to remain at school due to the need for transportation and proper supervision. In the rare instances when schools are dismissed early, families will receive a ParentLink phone call and the information will appear on the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us, and our Sioux Falls School District social media sites (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SiouxFallsSchoolDistrict/ and Twitter: twitter.com/SFSchools ). Announcements are also made over the local radio and television stations.

Notifications refer to dismissal “one hour early” or “two hours early” because of the number of different building schedules. In addition to noting the early dismissal, announcements about evening activities are normally included.

It is very important that every family has a plan for early dismissal. Be sure your student knows where to go in case no one is at home. Parents/Guardians are urged to talk with their student about his/her safety during winter weather emergencies.

Be Safe This Winter

The school system offers these suggestions concerning cold weather and

emergency situations:

1. Listen for a ParentLink phone call regarding school closings, late starts, or early dismissals. Check the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us for updated information. Follow us on our Sioux Falls School District social media sites (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SiouxFallsSchoolDistrict/ and Twitter: twitter.com/SFSchools ) for updated information. Announcements will also be made on local radio and television stations. (Please avoid calling schools or the Instructional Planning Center. Phone lines are needed for emergency communications.)

2. Make sure students are properly dressed for predicted weather conditions so they are prepared for walking or waiting for a bus in the cold or for being delayed on a bus in a weather-related situation.

3. Students should not arrive at school until the scheduled time for outdoor staff supervision or the breakfast program begins.

4. Develop a plan and inform your student about where your student will go if school is dismissed early.

5. School officials will use their best judgment about school closings, late starts, or early dismissals, but please remember that a parent has the right to keep children home or to pick them up from school early if they feel weather conditions require this action.
