Staff Bulletin
From the Rutgers School of Social Work Staff Council
June 2021
Summer 2021 is taking shape!
Again, we acknowledge our colleagues who are currently experiencing furloughs and wanted to share a few tips from colleagues who were previously furloughed:
- Everyone whose work yours interacts with should know that you will be on furlough- expectation setting during this time is key.
- Plan an activity or something to do for your day off to avoid being overwhelmed.
- If you need help, ask!

Staff Spark Notes
- Juneteenth, which became a state holiday in NJ last year, commemorates a historic event that happened more than a century and a half ago. Read more from SSW Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Marla Blunt-Carter, here.
- IFF launched the training component of the ICARE (Inclusion, Care, Respect and Empathy) for the LGBTQ+ Community partnership with The Hudson Pride Center. This work will provide education and improve practices that advance inclusion of and efficacy of services for New Jersey Department of Human Services – Division of Family Development consumers who identify as LGBTQ+.
- Since we're still working remotely, don't forget as staff you can download Microsoft Office. All current faculty and staff at Rutgers have the ability to download and install Microsoft Office on personal devices through Rutgers Connect.
- Summer Family Movie at The Yard has begun! Click here for more events!
- Rutgers University is offering free COVID-19 vaccines to eligible individuals at clinics in Camden, Newark, and Piscataway. No insurance card is required. To make an appointment at one of our clinics, or to get help scheduling an appointment at a clinic closer to you, call Rutgers’ Vaccine Scheduling Assistance Program at 848-445-3033, Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm.
Meet a Staff Member
The work of SSW Staff is diverse-- in expertise, department, and location. To help showcase the individuals that make up our entire SSW Staff team, we've created a form for our "Meet the Staff" bulletin section for those who would like to introduce (or re-introduce) themselves to their colleagues.
Each month we'll highlight another submission to help shine a spotlight on the important and unique work of our colleagues.

Kerry Hennessy
- What is your position and how long have you been with the School of Social Work? I've been at the SSW for 3 years, but go back many years with Rutgers. I'm an alum of Rutgers College and Rutger School of Public Health and have worked several years at the Cancer Institute and on several Rutgers based projects.
- What was your first job? I worked in a bagel store in high school and I still love bagels!
- Do your prefer coffee or tea? Neither! I love Starbucks hot chocolate with raspberry.
- If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be? I know most wouldn't consider it a meal, but CHOCOLATE! Preferably dark chocolate.
- What is your favorite holiday and why? Christmas because we get together with my parents and all of my siblings and their families (we're up to 28 of us now). The kids love spending time with their cousins! This year we planned our Christmas for July due to COVID concerns. Looking forward to a fun celebration.
- What fictional place would you like to visit? I'll go with a theme and say Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. And I hope there's samples.
