Goodbye and Thank you, everyone!

This Wednesday will be last day at Leicester as I am graduating. Thank you all for welcoming me into your school community. It has been a great honor. I have always been impressed with how dedicated and caring you all are. I hope the rest of the school year is wonderful and the summer is restful!

This Week in Guidance

Ms.Medford's and Ms.Olson's class will be discussing calming strategies.

Kindergarten will be continuing with the Second Step program and practicing compassion.

Third grade will be practicing calming strategies that they can use outside of school and during testing.

Calming Strategies

In third and fourth grade, students are learning to first notice the cues from their bodies that they are feeling stress or nervousness. After noticing these cues, students are encouraged to try a calming strategy that they like.

Some suggestions include:

  • Using positive self-talk: Students notice their unhelpful thoughts and think of a more helpful way to say that. "I can't do this" becomes "This is really hard and I might need some help."
  • Take deep breaths: One way to do this is through square breathing, in which students breath in, hold their breath, and breath out in equal four counts. Some students find it helpful to draw a square as they are doing this. There is a visual of this below.
