French Draughtsman, Sculptor, Printmaker, and Painter

While Matisse was a Draughtsman (One who does mechanical drawings), a sculptor, and a printmaker, his most renown stemmed from his painting.

One of Matisse's most well known works was his 1905 painting: "Woman With A Hat."

He is also known for his painting, "The Dance," which had two variations the first being in 1909 and the second 1910).

First moved to Paris in 1887 to study law.

Became a friend and rival to Picasso. They were introduced to one another when they had met in a salon (organized art expedition) run by Gertrude Stein.

Friends with many of the Americans in Paris at the time, namely the Cone sisters of Baltimore, Clarabel and Etta had collected a copious quantity of his paintings.
