Ok, I'm going to spill the beans and share our idea with you... to start our 1920's web series we need a jumping off point - last week they narrowed it down to the movie industry during the 1920's. I love this idea because over the course of the 1920's, the film industry went through some pretty dramatic changes that definitely contributed to the shaping of American social norms. This new form of entertainment changed people's daily habits and influenced the economy. So basically they will be making movies about people who made movies!
We started our day exploring Vaudevilles, which was a type of entertainment featuring a mixture of specialty acts such as comedy, song and dance. Night shows such as Jimmy Fallon or Ed Sullivan can trace their roots back to Vaudevilles. Our class was given about 30 minutes to come up with an act for our own Vaudeville show (results are below).
Then we transitioned to silent movies - once again after learning about the typical format of a silent movie they broke into groups and started working on their own. All of these experiences will help them empathize with the characters in our web series.
