When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Lyrics

When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again

When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer and the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

The old church bell will peal with joy
Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling boy,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village lads and lassies say
With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the Jubilee,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The laurel wreath is ready now
To place upon his loyal brow
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

Let love and friendship on that day,
Hurrah, hurrah!
Their choicest pleasures then display,
Hurrah, hurrah!
And let each one perform some part,
To fill with joy the warrior's heart,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home

What I think this song means

I believe that this song means that one day a young man named Johnny has went to war. Also that when war was over he would come marching home and that everything would be perfectly fine and as in gay I think that they mean that they'll all be really happy when Johnny comes marching home and that they have been waiting for him to come back. When this song says,"The men will cheer and the boys will shout The ladies they would all turn out" I believe that they mean that all the men would be happy and proud of what he has accomplished and that the ladies will start to like Johnny more than before he went off to war. I also believe that when they say," Let love an friendship on that day" means that they were all very close with Johnny so they will continue to be very kind and friends with him .
