Leyden teacher named 2023 Cook County Co-Regional Teacher of the Year
Leyden’s very own Dr. Sawsan Jaber has been named 2023 Cook County Co-Regional Teacher of the Year and is one of 13 finalists for the 2023 Illinois Teacher of the Year. The Illinois State Board of Education selected Jaber, an English teacher at East Leyden, through a highly competitive annual process that recognizes the best in the teaching profession in the state.
Jaber was surprised with this honor on Tuesday, January 24, when invited to “give her perspective” on a mystery virtual call with colleagues. When she signed on, she was greeted by State Superintendent Dr. Carmen I. Ayala, Board President Greg Ignoffo, Superintendent Dr. Polyak and East Principal Dr. Manola, who shared the good news.
An emotional Jaber said, “I don’t have the words….I am just so honored. After taking a few minutes to take it all in, Jaber shared that she comes from a family of refugees, she is the first member of her family to go to university, and it means everything to share this honor with them, and the students at Leyden who inspire her every day.
“Thank you for all of your support here at Leyden,” said Jaber. “I tell everyone, if it doesn’t happen here, it won’t happen anywhere.”
