MMA Montessori Moments
September 9th, 2019
-"The innocent men, women, and children who lost their lives on an airplane, at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, and on the streets of New York.
- The civil servants, firefighters, police officers, and military personnel who have dedicated and lost their lives protecting our safety, our freedom, and our democracy.
-The thousands of families and friends who grieve their loss." (StarTribune, 2007)
Today, and always, we remember what happened on September 11, 2001.

What is one thing you cannot resist? Milk chocolate
What is your favorite thing to do? Hang out with my family and be outside
Where is the most interesting place you've traveled to and why? We traveled to D.C. this past summer. I learned more history in 2 weeks than all my time in school.
Who is your biggest inspiration? I've had lots of people who inspire me for different reasons, but the children I work with every day always inspire me to be happy, curious, and hard-working.
What advice do you have for kids who are struggling at school? Don't give up! We all have something special to contribute
How do you define success? I always tell my students I want them to do their best, not be perfect. I think this is one of the best characteristics of success

Welcome Mr. Zoelan and Ms. Vanessa H.! We are excited to have Ms. Vanessa back this year supporting Ms. Angela as her assistant. Mr. Zoelan will be supporting Ms. Pat.
We are still searching for assistants. We have another interview this week for an assistant, so thanks to those that have sent individuals our way. Right now, Ms. Karen, Ms. Vanessa, and Ms. Stacey do not have teaching assistants. We have two special education teaching assistants open at this time as well. We are doing our best to hire excellent individuals to fill these part-tie positions; and, until then we are arranging for subs to cover these positions in order to best support our teachers and students.
Please pass along the word and tell anyone interested in these teaching assistant positions that they just need to email Lana and René their resume to apply.
Redwoods Parent Information Night
You will receive essential trip information like costs, chaperone needs, trip expectations, and volunteer opportunities. This, and all future meetings about Alliance Redwoods, are mandatory and vital in order to assist everyone with the process. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our experiences.
If you have questions, please contact Ms. Nicoletta (nhouseholder@mariamontessoriacademy.org) or Ms. Lana (lpas@mariamontessoriacademy.org).
MMA Fun Run (Boosterthon)
Volunteer Background Checks
There will be someone at MMA to conduct background checks next week on September 17th at 5pm - before the MAPA begins at 6pm. Volunteers will need to make 2 payments at this time $37 to MMA for processing and $25 to Academica West for doing the live scan. Cash, check, and charge are all accepted.
We realize that it can be tough for some of our families to pay for background checks and we don't want this to be a barrier to volunteering inside school. Please know that once you're in this new system (Rapback), you will not have to pay or do this again. If you want to know if they're already in the system or not, please email Ms. Lana.
I am so happy to share with you that we are doing Original Works again this year. For those of you who do not know what this is, the students make artwork and we send it to a company that will put it on all sorts of things you can purchase. These things include magnets, cards, bags, cups, ornaments, towels, and pillowcases, to name a few. I use the things I order as holiday gifts for my own children's grandparents. I also like to order an ornament to add to my Christmas tree. The proceeds from this go to your student's classroom to be used for their class. In the past, I have used my funds for field trips, a class pet, and materials. This is a wonderful way to help get money for the classroom and things teachers and students may need.
Classroom teachers may choose to participate. Please contact your student's teacher for more information.
Thank you,
Ms. Jalee and Volunteer Parents

Do you ever wonder what your child is talking about when they come home? What is this lingo that they are speaking? This is a great resource of Montessori terminology a library of terms: https://montessori-ami.org/resource-library/facts/glossary-montessori-terms
Prepared Environment
The Montessori classroom is an environment prepared by the adult for children. It contains all the essentials for optimal development but nothing superfluous. Attributes of a prepared environment include order and reality, beauty and simplicity. Everything is child-sized to enhance the children's independent functioning. A trained adult and a large enough group of children of mixed ages make up a vital part of the prepared environment.
Work
From an evolutionary perspective, the long period of childhood exists so children can learn and experiment in a relatively pressure-free environment. Most social scientists refer to this pressure-free experimentation as play (e.g., see Groos, 1901), although Montessori preferred to call this activity the work of childhood. Children certainly are serious when engaged in the kind of play that meets developmental needs and, given freedom and time, will choose purposeful activities over frivolous make-believe ones.
