GEM info
While you are in your day to day grind, please take note of all the wonderful things you notice about your colleagues and consider submitting a GEM (Great Educators Matter) nomination form.
The internal Employee Recognition Program (GEM: Great Educators Matter) seeks to recognize outstanding employees who serve the mission of the district in a manner that exceeds job/salary expectations...those who go "above and beyond the call of duty" on a semi-annual basis. CISD employees are nominated by their peers and, two times per school year, as many as 30 are recognized before the Board of Trustees. Their names are also added to the "Wall of Honor" in the district's Vonita White Administration Building.
Do you know anyone who fits this description? Of course you do! Wilson is filled with GEMs!!
Nominations are due no later than November 14th. Below are the instructions on how to submit a nomination. If you have any questions, please see Jennifer Adams.

National Handwashing Awareness Week
December 4th-10th is National Handwashing Awareness Week. In honor of this week, I am planning to work with specials teachers during PLC time for each grade level from December 1st-8th to review proper handwashing technique! I plan to do a small re-cap during the December 9th Rise and Shine assembly. Please continue encouraging your kids to wash their hands as much as possible, especially after using the bathroom. And if a bathroom is not available to them to wash their hands, please have your learners use hand sanitizer. Thank you!
Cleaning your Rooms
We have had a lot of sickness lately at Wilson! Yikes! I am going to recommend that each day you wipe down your tables, door knobs, and other common areas with Clorox wipes if you have them. Especially during flu season. If you don’t have wipes, maybe you could ask for donations. If we work with housekeeping to keep things as clean as possible, maybe it will cut back on some of the sickness here at Wilson! Thank you ALL for your help to keep our kids healthy!

STAAR Blueprint Updates from Debbie Youngs
TEA has shortened the STAAR assessments in grades 3-8 for the spring of 2017 in order to comply with HB 743. HB 743 required STAAR assessments be designed so that:
- 85% of learners in grades 3-5 can complete the assessments within 2 hours; and
- 85% of learners in grades 6-8 can complete the assessments within 3 hours.
HB 743 is a test design requirement. It does not require TEA to shorten the amount of time learners are given to take the test. To date, TEA has not indicated that it intends to shorten the amount of time learners are given to take the test. However, they are indicating that there will be less questions on each of the STAAR assessments.
Tests were shortened in the following manner from the 2015 tests:
- STAAR grades 3-8 math - shortened by 14 questions each
- STAAR grade 3 reading - shortened by 6 questions
- STAAR grades 4-8 reading - shortened by 8 questions each
- STAAR grades 4 writing - shortened by 1 essay and changed from 2 days to 1 day and shortened by 4 multiple choice questions for a total of 5 items
- STAAR grade 5 science - shortened by 8 questions
TEA indicated that the method used to shorten the STAAR assessments in grades 3-8 will not impact the planned 2016-2017 passing standards. This means the slight increase in the performance standard to achieve Level II Satisfactory that was originally planned for 2016-2017 will remain in place.
TEA will resume the process of embedding field-test questions in STAAR assessments in grades 3-8. There will be 6 embedded field test questions for math, reading, science, and social studies. The STAAR 4th grade writing test will have 5 embedded field test questions, and the 7th grade writing test will have 6 embedded field test questions. The revised blueprints for STAAR assessments in grades 3-8 for spring 2017 are located at:http://tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/staar/.
