Center Township Weekly Update
February 3, 2023
Greeting CT Families & Friends!
It has been bitterly cold outside this week but the generosity of the Center Township Elementary School community is truly heartwarming! The CT PTO held a food drive for the Kids' Weekend Backpack program asking the students and their families to donate particular food items each day of the week. Our students brought in so much food that we had to request a midweek pick-up because we were running out of space to store the donated items. Our school collected more than 10,000 food items to help the students in our community!
Six More Weeks
Punxsutawney Phil, the world-famous meteorologist/groundhog, made his annual prediction yesterday morning, emerging from his burrow at 7:22 am and seeing his shadow. According to lore, this means spring is still six more weeks away. We are not so sure about the accuracy of Phil, but we are positive that Groundhog Day was leveraged by our creative teachers for engaging and educational learning for our students. Mrs. Oniboni and Miss Zilka’s kindergartners participated in Groundhog Day read alouds and made groundhog hats as part of the day’s celebration.
Future Engineers
Fourth graders in Mrs. Grossman’s science classes have moved into a creative engineering unit, Motion and Design. This unit invites students to explore the physics of motion and to apply these concepts to technological design. Using plastic construction materials, weights, rubber bands, and propellers, students designed and built vehicles. The students had 20 minutes to design, test, make modifications and present their first design challenge; build a vehicle that travels 100 cm.
Mochi Music
This year in 5th grade music class, students are exploring World Music by going on virtual field trips each week. The past few weeks they have been exploring the culture and music of Japan! They have learned about the tradition of making mochi (a Japanese rice cake), and how the process involves rhythm and steady beat. They have been working hard to master the hand clapping song Omochio Tsukimasho, and some students have even taken it upon themselves to make their own unique versions of the game!
SOAR Showdown
Last week was our SOAR Winter Warm-Up. Students participated in fun review and challenges to help them to keep SOARing at CT. There was a class level competition/showdown at the end of the week to give the students the opportunity to demonstrate all that they remembered about what SOARing looks like around our school. The winners were announced on CTTV. Mrs. Karenbauer’s students were super excited to win the kindergarten classroom challenge!
