Bulldog Bulletin
New Britton Elementary - September 25, 2015
Principal's Message
Dear Bulldog Families,
I would like to thank our New Britton families and staff for your support with our 2015 Pasta Bowl Food Drive. New Britton was named as the elementary school that donated the most pasta for this service project. The impact of our donations will directly benefit families in our community and the greater Indianapolis area. The conversation that this food drive allowed us to have with our children was also beneficial in developing our students’ empathy and understanding of unmet basic needs that others may have.
Teachers have created some additional and more flexible scheduling options for our October Parent-Teacher Conferences. You will be receiving information from your child’s teacher by the afternoon of Monday, September 28th at the latest. You will be able to sign up for a conference by using an online scheduling software called PTC Fast. After Monday, please contact your student’s teacher with any questions you may have about the program or scheduling a conference.
As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

What do I need to know about school age children and sleep?
School aged children still need somewhere between 9 and 12 hours of sleep at night. At this age, kids usually start a trend towards becoming more and more sleep deprived. As parents, you will need to help figure out how much sleep your child needs. Your child is getting the right amount of sleep if they:
- Can fall asleep within 15 to 30 minutes.
- Can wake easily at the time they need to get up and don’t need you to keep bugging them to get up.
- Are awake and alert all day and don’t need a nap during the day. Check with your child’s teacher and make sure your child is able to stay awake and alert during school.
In other words, if your child can go to bed, fall asleep easily, wake up easily, and not be tired during the day, then they are getting enough sleep.
A recent study was conducted which surveyed kindergarten through 4th grade kids, their parents, and teachers about sleep. Teachers reported that about 10% of the kids were falling asleep in school. Like us adults, many of our kids are sleep deprived. Remember, letting kids stay up late isn’t doing them or you a favor. Many sleep deprived students have attention and learning problems in the school setting which affects their academic progress. Students need their sleep each night to continue to learn all the new material that is given to them throughout the day plus they are still growing their bodies and brain.
Make sure that you have a bedtime routine and stick to it. We all know that sometimes that routine gets altered, but consistency is important. Don’t radically change this routine during the weekend, over breaks, or during the summer; keeping with the consistency theme will help with the transition back to school. If you don’t have a bedtime routine, start one now and see the benefits. If sleep concerns continue for your student, discuss these concerns with your medical professional since they might be able to pinpoint a medical cause. Chaucie's Place
NEW BRITTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is partnering again this year with Chaucie’s Place, a child advocacy organization in Hamilton County, to bring Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children to our Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students. Smart Steps is a child sexual abuse prevention and education program that empowers your child to say “NO!” to any unwanted touches that make them uncomfortable from anyone.
The Smart Steps education program will be taught at NBE on October 20.
We invite you to attend a Chaucie’s Place Parent Night to learn more about the Smart Steps program. Fall Creek Elementary will be hosting on Tuesday, September 15th from 6:00pm-7:00pm and Sand Creek Elementary will be hosting from 6:00-7:00pm on Wednesday, September 23rd. These meetings are open to all parents and/or guardians of Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students. Please be advised that Parent Night is not open to children. To learn more about Chaucie’s Place visit: www.chauciesplace.org.
New Staff Spotlight
My husband, Ed and I, have three grown children; Nicole, Corey, and Caitlen. This is my 15th year of teaching. I’ve taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. Many have been in a high-ability classroom. My favorite children’s book is Lilly’s Plastic Purse. I love to read, listen to music, take walks, and travel.
